    Default Help with Japanese jigheads

I plan on buying some jigheads from Japan. What size do you folks typically buy from over there?? I like to use size 4 and size 6 hooks, just wondering about a good all around weight? I was looking at the 1g jigheads and almost pulled the trigger but decided I had better ask here.

One other thing, what manufacturers besides Daiwa makes a sharp jighead? I lose quite a few here on Barkley and Kentucky, really don't want to over spend. Thanks!

1g is slightly heavier than 1/32 oz and what I almost always start with.

I use a lot of Cabela's jig heads. They use Mustad hooks. Are they as good as premium JDM? Doubtful, but I catch a lot of fish with them.

I lose quite a few also. I talk about these on my channel. The Daiwa Gekkabijin jig hooks are somewhat bigger than the US hook size counterpart.....don’t ask me why as I have not been able to find out.....yet they are supposed to be identical. A #8 for instance is really closer to our #6. I have them in #4.....#6......#8....#10. I rarely if ever use the #4. I prefer the #8 for everything. I have .5 gram up 3 gram in half gram increments.....I rarely use 3 gram jig heads. I don’t have every jig head that comes out of Japan but I have tried a lot of brands. Here is the first thing you need to know....they are all very sharp....but the Daiwa jig heads are really like a needle. You can look at Decoy....Tict.....Cultiva.....Gamakatsu.....Shiman o......MagBite.....they are all sharp. I own each brand I just named.....they are all in a plastic storage bag. I only use the Daiwa ones....but you won’t go wrong with any of those. Check out Chris’s site Finesse Fishing. Oh.....a 1.5 gram #8 jig head is my sweet spot jig.

    Regards

I use 1.5 g #6 more than any, second is the same with #8 hook. I've also been hand-tying on them as well as using plastics. For dock shooting I don't like them - they don't skip as well as a round head, don't have a keeper (unless you put some floss and super-glue on there. That works great).

For dock shooting, I have settled on the 4x4 Jigs crappie jig with screw-lock, in 1/32 oz. It has a #2 lite-wire hook and a screw keeper. Survives high-velocity shooting, repeated impacts, and big fish, without the plastic pulling down. Almost as expensive as the Daiwa, though.

The first time you whack a pontoon with the gekkabijin jigs, the eyes, and half the paint, are gone. Save them for other uses, unless you really need to down size. They work well with small baits like teh TM (of course), small slabtails and itty bitty swim-rs.

For the paint; drdore uses an epoxy overcoat on his heads and they’re tough. He would have to tell you exactly what he uses but I bounced one of his off of some concrete yesterday and it didn’t lose the paint. I use bare lead and they have flat spots where I bounce them off of stuff.
