    Default Backing

I just received my lines in today’s mail. Boy, the stuff is small! Sunline troutist wild in 2.5 lb and the line Randy spoke of, area Meister in 3lb. My question is; what do I use for backing and how much? I’m ready to give this stuff a try.

I’ll be curious to see the answer on the backing. I have the troutist wild 3 lb going on a 20 size President. I’ll be in the same boat.

I just throw some 2lb sos on there and then join the 2 lines together... it may be sort of trail and error on how much but that is what I did before I put my ester sunline on the reel

Double uni? Or is there better? My first go around with this tiny line.

If you want to get it perfect, reel the main line on first, then use a uni-to-uni to join the backing, then reel the backing on. But you say, "Hey, DB4D, that leaves the backing on top and buries the premium line at the bottom." You're correct. So you need a spare spool. Take off the spool you've just filled with line and pop on the spare. Tie the backing from the full spool to the empty spool and wind it on. Your backing will then be on the bottom of the spool, the premium line will be on top, and it will be perfect.

If you don't have a spare spool, or you don't want to go to the trouble of the method above, just wind the backing on and leave space for the premium line.

I like the double uni. It's easy to tie and works well. Joe Robinson recommended it in his book, Piscatorial Absurdities.

I've never done it myself, but I have heard of people using the "handle turn" method:

    1) Check the reel instructions and see how many inches of line is taken up by each turn of the handle.

    2) Calculate how many inches of line the spool holds.

    3) Calculate how many turns of the handle will fill the spool.

    4) As you're putting the line on, count the handle turns till you hit the number from #3.

I use cheap 4# mono for a backing, fill up reel and pull off 30yds and add your line. If you go to say 2 or 3# line, You will have around 40 to 50yds of the new line on he spool. this is +- , but close.
