    Default Quick Kids Float

Myself and my buddy (big kids) took our two 9 year olds for a quick float on Cadron Creek in Central Arkansas. This is not one of the popular floating destinations in the state and we didn’t see anyone else the whole day. I knew that the conditions would be a little challenging, so I rigged up everyone with very small and light jigs. Man did it pay off. We caught around 60-70 small (think very small) longear sunfish, green sunfish, Spotted Bass, and Largemouth Bass. We did catch a few bigger bluegill. All kids had a great day. I had contemplated bringing one of my new rods so that I could really enjoy the dinks but I thought better about it. My BPS microlight now feels like a broom stick compared to the new rods. I need to find a good light action rod (6.5 - 7’) that I wouldn’t cry over if I lost it or broke it on a float. Any suggestions? My track record of loosing or breaking gear on float trips is pretty bad, especially when kids are involved. But man, that Tict IceCube would have been a blast yesterday!

That’s a great trip that those kids will talk about for a good while and remember for even longer. Very good job Dad.

For a cheap rods that belies it’s pricey try the Shakespeare micro series. Book say they come from 4’6” to 7’ 6” but I’ve never seen a 7’6”. I’ve had em all from 4’6” to 7’ and can’t remember breaking one on a fish. The 6’6” is my favorite to cast with, and for $18 you can’t go wrong. The Berkeley Cherrywoods are priced close but I’ve broken every one I’ve ever had,and I think that’s three of em.

There are some pretty creeks in NE OK. I have seen quite a few of them. Reminds me of the creeks in NW AR.

That looks like fun, used to float the Nolichucky River each summer and always caught a great mixed bag. Mainly Smallmouth on that river, would love to take a JDM back and tangle with the locals but would also be afraid I would break it.

I plan to wade this summer with my corto... it is a great rod... and would be better prepared for a surprise smallie... I think both of the ones I have were around 220 to the door... I have a 6’1” and a 6’10”... the 6’1” is for creeks... I haven’t used my tict rod much lately since I have been mostly trout fishing... JDM rods sure are game changers imo... by the way that float trip looks so much fun and I am sure everyone had a great time!
