A week away from the lake is just too long. In that time the water level rose 2 feet above average full pool ( thanks Alberto) and fell back 2 feet (your welcome TVA). High water also brings lots of floating debris which can clog up many main lake cuts and pockets, aka bluegill bedding areas. I ventured out into the high turbid waters Wednesday afternoon and found the gills still cooperative. A main lake sandy pocket was my first stop but flotsam and jetsam filled the area making it un-fishable! I could actually see the beds there last week. It is a shame to see what is thrown or washed into our lakes. Next few stops, nothing but small females. Shouldn’t the males be guarding nests the week after the full Moon? I hit two large well known bedding areas, fished a little deeper, and finally connected.

They just cannot stand a cricket pulled slowly by their nose! Once I realized I needed to fish deeper (duh-higher water) it was on.

I went though a full tube of crickets just to get 18 riders.

The females were relentless, lots of time not letting the cricket get to the bottom before they were off and gone with my offerings. All the ladies were released, as usual. Size wise, the males ran a little above average.

I called this one Notch as his tail and pelvic fin were notched, a fierce bed guardian he was!

Big fish of the night brushed the 9 inch mark and pulled as hard as any fish in the lake.

I can only hope that the water levels will stabilize in the coming weeks. A full moon at the end of the month could bring another possible spawn if our lake levels stay consistent. Fingers crossed ?!
