Default Fishing with family & JDM

Absolutely the best time with my Great Nephew Elias and Nephew Miles. We didn't get a bunch but we did find some nice ones. I think Elias is HOOKed! I like the JDM equipment for the kids - easy to hang on, very light, and forgiving.

Nice catch. How did hybrids get in there? That could turn into a problem way down the road.

Great pics. That young man had an excellent time, the smile says it all. That one your nephew is holding is a stud and would have come home for dinner. Thanks.

    Thnx guys

Ah - they probably got in from the aqueduct, water comes from up north. These fish look like the northern strain BG crossed with RE like you see at Lake Havasu. Started catching them last year. Seeing more of them and they are getting bigger. They might be a cross with the Coppernose and RE. I have seen both on beds right next to each other. The mouth is confusing to me. For their size (really plump) they are extremely aggressive. Great fight on the UL gear.
At LH you catch big Hybrids & RE but the northern BG are medium or small - a personal observation, might not be true for the whole lake or other peoples experiences. Its going to be interesting how it will impact the BG fishing at LP.

I'm sure those gills were a ton of fun on the JDM rods.

I have one, and it's easily my favorite rod.

    Thnx again guys.

Looked at some pics of Green Sunfish and I think that's what we are seeing. When the lake 1st open they were introduced. Didn't realize that they could get so big. These might have hybridized with the RE or BG. I know the REs and The BGs have crossed. Lake has stabilized for the last 2-3 seasons - very few draw downs - so they probably got a chance for a few spawns. We are finding these fish close to 17 FOW - think they spawn deeper then the BG and RE.

Anyhow - they are a blast to catch and a little thicker then the BGs. Going to have to keep a few, try them out for fish tacos....

fe - enjoy them while you can. Maybe we can hook it up this year.....

They look like hybrids to me......I had them in a lake I owned around 30 years back. It was a small lake...only 2 acres. They did fine and grew to around 2 pounds....but after about 6 years it became stunted with green sunfish.....which is one half of what a hybrid bluegill is. They are a cross between a northern strain bluegill and a green sunfish. Folks used to stock them a lot until the offspring started. Even though they are a hybrid the plan was to stock a lake....pond, with only males. While most fish stockings were males there would always be some females in the mix. The offspring would always be tons of stunted green sunfish. How they will do in a lake as big as LP I have no clue. TWRA took over some 60 acre lakes here in TN when Occidental gave them to the state. The ones in there were all 2 pounds. There was no problem with the inferior offspring in those lakes as TWRA stocked the lakes with Cherokee bass...which made quick work of them....LOL. The big hybrids have all long since been caught out. Most folks with private lakes around TN have given up on hybrids and now stock copper nose which will do well in TN if on a good feeding program. TWRA's plan for copper nose stocked in a 300 acre lake has not worked out.....I was so hoping it would...but I have not given up on them just yet. While I have caught some good ones....nothing like what you regularly catch though...but still good fish around the 10 inch mark.....but the numbers are lacking. The hybrids are very aggressive...and I hope they do well there. You already have a world class bluegill fishery there and if those hybrids work out it would be awesome.

Thnx for the insight Ah. We have a really healthy Bass population, think that helps curbing the stunted fish. Seems like the Spotted Bass are making a come back also and we have big catfish (that nobody fishes for). Lots of predators. I think things are only going to get better with the planned expansion of the lake.
