Have any pictures of the shell cracker beds themselves? I can't seem to visual tell the difference in blue gill and shell cracker beds

No. They look about the same to me. I seem to catch the shell crackers a little deeper than the bluegills on the. Ed. These were about 3.5 deep on the beds.

I just had a hook, half a red worm and large split shot about a foot up.

I drop shot for them. Cast out with a #6 long shank hook about 12-18" above the bottom weight. Casting out and working it back creates an angle that has the worm closer to the bottom than it would appear.

The water I fish is littered with downed timber/logs, and plenty of weeds etc. With the drop shot I try to ride over the junk with the hook/worm.
