Jigs will catch any species in fresh or salt water. This article contains all you need to know to learn jig fishing. Focus on the "how to". The slider is a great bait, but the method works with ANY jig. Also, you don't have to use the weedless jig heads shown here. (I prefer an exposed hook.)

You gotta leave the bait at home if you want to learn the jig.

I really do need to leave the bait at home, guess I need to have a couple empty handed fishing trips in order to really learn the art of jigging.
Has anyone used cranks for brim? I've used them on large mouths and I saw mini's at the local bass pro for crappie.

    1. IMO, jigs are far better than crankbaits most of the time.

    2. I don't like treble hooks for small-mouth species like gills.

Buy some Trout Magnets. (Walmart carries them.) Use 4# line max and fish them as described in the article I linked to above. You will catch bluegills. Sometimes it helps to tip the jig with bait.

I actually have the crappie magnet, or panfish magnet can't remember. I have a hard time understanding what they are saying to do. It says to not jig it because it is supposed to fall horizontally. I will look at that link you posted I'm sure it has plenty of great information.

I read the how to with jigging, it stated 3-5 second turns of the reel handle for a very very slow retrieve. Is this about how you'd do it? Or pulling the pole up and reeling the slack?

Add a Crappie nibble to your jigs, it will really bring them in.

That article was of the better ones I have read. I actually copied and filed that to visit and revisit. I would also say that fishing productive water is also one key to success with any bait or lure. No Duh right. It took me a while to figure how to do that fishing for BG&SC. Being and X bass fisher my technique was backwards. I would float parallel to the bank and cast out and pull in hoping to find that hidden wash tub of fish. Had a really weird day today. The fish were in 6 FOW. Till it started lightning and then they were on the trailer headed to the lake of grease.
