Never used the SJ but have used Spam and hot dogs. Both are excellent baits.

I have not even touched a Slim Jim in maybe a decade, I just can't bring myself to buy one for my consumption or any animal, lol! But I have used hot dog.

I was browsing you tube on gills and found a lot of video of folks catching a lot of gills with Slim Jims and was amazed. Yeah, catfish too, but several fellers proved
Slim Jims were better than worms and most other live baits. Greasy and scent spreading seemed to bring them in for the catch. I will do my own test for sure.

Never tried Slim Jims, but cheap hot dogs work. My grandboys have been catching bream with hot dogs their whole lives.

I've never fished for gills using a Slim Jim, however... I did know a fella once that used to unlock cars with a Slim Jim! Does that count?

Meat fishing is very big all over Europe, particularly for carp. If you type in "meat fishing carp" or "meat fishing for carp", you'll pull up loads of videos on how they prepare and fish it. It's interesting but not always necessary for the US.

As I said before, I prefer spam or hot dogs. Much cheaper than worms or crickets and works great.

FWIW: I caught my biggest freshwater fish (a 22# grass carp) on a 1/4" piece of hot dog.

Slices of bologna work well too whenever I run out of red wigglers and wax worms.
