Default Plain Hook vs Tipped Jig

It seems to me that a Plain hook with a wax worm would out fish a jig and wax worm combo. The reason being is that the plain hook wax worm would look so much more natural and have slow tantalizing fall, has anybody done a side by side comparison ?

No, but I've caught a LOT of gills on a tipped jig. One great feature of a jig is that the fish almost never swallow it, unlike a bare hook.

Having said that, I think: live maggot + small hook + light line = deadliest bait on the planet (and not just for gills.)

I use a teardrop like in my avatar and tip it with a waxworm. Works for me.

I have thought about this and done the side by side test on a lake with gills that are on the spooky side and I do agree that the bare hook beats the jig when fishing clear water. May be less true when fishing waters with less clarity. I did switch from a hook to a jig and that sparked a few bites after the plain hook bite had died, but that was likely because there was a hatch happening.
