Sounds like a great time.

I and the wife ventured forth into the interior of Iowa for a go at a little county lake that we had done well at before. She set up on a fishing jetty and I slipped the float tube in for some mobility. The fish were holding at all depths but most were suspended at 4-5' . I got a few on a small spider pattern but only if free falling. I finally ended up with a small, simple red butt jig 4' under a slip float. Any jig needed to be small.
I have no doubt that my fly rod and a little more patience would have served me well here.
Since the wife was on a slow bite from bank we moved on to another lake much closer to home. I decided to kick up to the upper end of the lake where there is a ramp to get out on . As it turned out that was a poor choice. There was a thin sticky algae slime on the surface and I was in it before I found it to be a problem.
We stopped at a car wash and it took a long time with strong soap to rid the tube and waders of the mess.
At the next lake we found some nice gills at 3' off a well used fishing jetty by casting much further than most would. I will be returning to this lake for a float trip after I clean the tube with a bleach solution .
We finished the long day with 40 gills including 2 thick 6 1/2" deep hooked gills for a mini filleting try lol . I was surprised that there is a nice gill chip on each side.
I didn't get any pictures this trip but we had a nice time in spite of the bite and algae bloom.
Sounds like a great time.
