Yes, they are, and pet stores are a good place to buy bait. I buy most of my bait at Petco.

I just raise red wigglers. Look in the live bait section on how to raise them.

Same here in that order. By far crickets will catch more bream than earth worms or Catawba's.....but they all work good. The draw back on crickets is frequent re-baiting. But, if you want numbers crickets is the way to go. That's the way it is on the Choctahatchee River in the Florida Panhandle.

Some years back I saw where there was a rope with whole chickens hanging above the water by a couple of feet in a cove. Smell what bad but the maggots were working on it. As the maggots got bigger they fell into the water, that is where the magic was happening. Under the chicken and Maggot combo was a ton of fish. There was all kinds, not just blue gills and small bait fish but the larger predator fish too. After talking with a couple of guys they said that it has been like that for years. They says that you just anchor up and start catching them. what is fun is on the ultra-lights you may catch a cat or bass and the fight is on. I plan on doing this this year in Texas to see what the results are. If I can keep the turkey buzzards and the Mexican eagles away it may be good fishing. I think that it is worth a shot. What else could it hurt.

Here is my question: How long does it take for maggots to start forming when the temps during the day are over 80F degrees?

Kind of funny a guy I know has a tree in the middle of his pond and he has a tennis racket tied to a limb and he puts a deer leg on it... The big gills hang under it along with some pretty nice bass
