    Default Laurel Hill Gills

Caught 70 Gills at Laurel Hill Lake today. All the fish were between 8 and 9 inches with a big girth. Found them using Humminbird 899 si sonar. It is changing the way I fish. All fish caught on a Bison colored Trout Magnet using 2# test line.

I'm assuming the dark circles is a bed? I want to upgrade my electronics but not sure if it's worth it.

You are the only one who can decide that. I can only tell you my experience. I fish 4 or 5 days a week. That unit is on a kayak. If you are a serious crappie...Gill fisherman it will change the way you fish and put more fish in the boat. You can eliminate all the unproductive water pretty quick. Crappie and Gills have a unique signature on the down scan and side scan....once you learn it you will know pretty quick what you are seeing. One would have to be blind to not see a bluegill bed with the thing. I went to Center Hill Lake this past Sunday. It is a clear deep water reservoir. I paddled along until I saw the beds on the sonar and started casting. Three hours later I had caught 33 shell cracker....all of them 10-11 inches. Six weeks before that I got into big black nose crappie....doing the same thing....just paddling along. It has changed the way I fish.

I would agree electronic has changed the way I fish as well. I bought a Humminbird 170, not quite as advanced as the 899 - not by a long shot.

But I don't waste time fishing waters that don't hold fish. Plus - when I'm fishing 15 -20 foot of water an I see a ball of bait fish cruze by, it's alot of fun to catch fish you have marked.
Wishing you Blue Skies and Tight Lines

I use a cheapo Humminbird 110 portable ($112 at Walmart). I put it on my float tube, and the six AA batteries last about 20 fishing trips!

My cheapo one has pix of fish and the depth by each one! Why spend all that money for a "blur" on the screen?

    Boar,

Yeah, I sure would! I picked up the Humminbird 110 last year (WalMart for $112) and got a 2' piece of PVC and made my own FF holder.

I strap it on my float tube, and see the depth, water temp, and fish better than the thousand dollar units! LOL

I purchase the cheapo batteries, and they last a very long time! The fish finder is almost indestructible! Very easy to carry, super light and no big 12 V needed.

In your dreams. How can you tell someone that nonsense when you've never used an expensive unit. Okay, i see the LOL now.
