The moon doesn`t matter as much down here!
Question? I have always heard that the gills and crackers gon on bed every full moon during summer. Is this so for eather or both. I remember catching mlarge numbers as a kid but never looked at the moon. Is it b4 the full during or after the full moon. How long does it last. If you have an opinion let me have it. I caught some large strings as a kid but never looked at the moon. Too busy cleaning and braggin!!

I've always considered prime time to be three days before and three days after the full moon. Gills will spawn all summer, and they generally start when the water temps hit about 67. I haven't noticed this as much with shellcrackers, but they're not as prevalent in the places I fish.
The days before and after is what I have observed here with gills and redear too. Do the crappie wait for the full moon or are they always in the mood once the water temps get right. I have never observed crappie on the beds and won't this year with all the dark water we have.
As others have said, spawning is a function of water termperature, not moon phase. However there is evidence that moon phase has an affect upon activity level. Here is what In-Fisherman has to say about Bass (holds true for panfish)

I maintain that the best time to go fishing is every time you get the chance.

Well put Mr. Jim!
here is a great link with some good info,i have always found the week of the full moon to be the most productive where i fish.although i must agree , it does not matter where the moon is if water temp is not right.

I could be wrong but from what I remember the Redears or Chinks only truly spawn one time depending on water temp. Possibly late April or May depending on the weather here in North East Texas. The Bluegills go every month of the summer from my experience. This does not mean you want catch them with the Gills. Because some males will try to cross breed with the Gills. But for true Red Ear bed action I think the first spawn is where I have had most of my luck.
