    Default panfish versus bass

    Do you ever just target panfish and if so, why do you like catching panfish and not just bass or pike or other sportfish? In my club some members turn their noses up at crappie or other panfish and I have always thought the bias strange. Maybe it's just me...

    I like to catch bass, but I don't really like to fish for bass. Much of the tackle and techniques of bass fishing just don't appeal to me.

    I like action. I'd much rather catch a bunch of smaller fish on UL tackle than winch a few 2-pound bass into the boat with a heavy worm rod. And the occasional bass I catch when bluegill or crappie fishing is just that much more fun on UL tackle.

    Most of the time, I fish small, generic lures or baits that will catch everything.

    Bass are the glamour fish that get all the publicity. If you're a "Gilligan's Island" fan, you'll understand this analogy:

    Bass = Ginger

    Panfish = Mary Ann

    I'm a "Mary Ann" kind of guy. :D

    Something well-fed and pampered. How about farm-raised salmon?

    I used to fish a lot of bass tournaments in the early 80's but even then the most fun I could have was on a bream bed with a fly rod. I love to crappie and bream fish.

    Alot more action, and the Gills and Crappie are delicious.

    Agreed, crappie & bluegill win every time. Especially when you get in some good ones. My son likes to tease me but I tell him when I was young and immature, I like bass fishing too. I still do but love crappie fishing. Great eating too!

    Get a better fight out of a crappie on light tackle and an occassional bass every now and then. There is so much hype about bass fishing and pressure on them, it not as enjoyable as it used to be.

    I usually fish for them every summer and enjoy it but the majority of the year I'm throwing jigs for crappie and shellcracker & bluegill.

    When I fish for bass it is smallmouth in the small rivers in my area from a canoe or wade fishing with UL gear. When you hang a nice one the chances of him getting away are as good as landing him. I have spent many fantastic days doing this. I must say panfish get my attention 95% of the time. Nothing like panfish on UL equipment IMO.

    Bass are fun to catch, but I rarely target them specifically. I was brought up using slip bobbers/minnow or jig combinations and still can't get away from it. Around here where I fish you never know what is taking it under. Could be a bluegill or maybe a BIG flathead, you just never know. Let them Bass get all the glory I'll take panfish everytime.
