Are the shrimp frozen or fresh when you buy them. Cooked or raw? We do not have a Kroger store in my area is why I ask. Thanks Frank

The ones I get a are peeled, cooked, and frozen. Get the small ones. Thaw a few, cut into pieces, soak in heavy, heavy salt water over night. Drain, place in a small Ziplock bag, and keep in the refrigerator. It's makes a good tipping.

    Question Attn. croppy1

croppy1, Do you trim the long tails on your Slater's jigs for gills? Got black, black, black #8 hook . I and two grandsons headed to southern Iowa lakes this weekend. May be too clear of water there for these though. Thank you for your very well written posts. Mike

Did the shrimp thing yesterday for crappie and we caught 42 in the boat traffic and wind from 4 to 9 feet deep, also had 3 pretty nice goggleyes. Don't know if it helped or not but it sure didn't hurt. I like to tip my jigs. Saw some shellcrackers up in shallow water on our walk thru a campground, will have to go for some next week after this long weekend is over and the boat traffic eases off some. Will shrimp work on shellcrackers too?

    Default shrimp for shellcrackers

You can catch shellcrackers on shrimp but I think you would have much better luck with a pack of nightcrawlers. I have always done better on shellcrackers with nightcrawlers than with any other bait I have used.
Also look for some water that has been stirred or muddied up a little, for some reason (probably b/c of the insects stirred up from the bottom) they like the muddy water better than the clear water

I tried the shrimp thing on Friday. Didn't work for me. I tried that and wax worms. Ended up catching 2doz. bluegills all on the wax worms nothing on the shrimp. Also caught 3 crappies all on minnows. I did have about 3 "nibbles" on the shrimp but nothing too hard. It's still pretty early for crappies up here in IA though so maybe that's the problem.

I never trim the hair on a Slater's jig. # 8 for bluegill in black-black-black is the best choice.

Glad to hear some of you are trying the shrimp and having good luck. I just bought a new bag yesterday.

Dumb question from a newbie, but would the shrimp work even for a area where the fish have never seen or smelled a shrimp?
