Hey I was about to ask this on the main board when I saw your post. I've been trying for a couple years to figure out how to fish at night successfully. I've gone 8 or 9 times and only had one trip that was worthwhile. Do you have any pointers on the kinds of places to set up when night fishing?

I generally troll the creeks late evening looking for surface activity from crappie feeding then find a good tree nearby and light up a couple laterns and start fishing!

So basically, you find the bait first, and then put out lights. Ok. Good to know.

No, I get in the back creeks on Skiatook couple hours before sunset, drop anchor and watch edge of main channel for fish activity on top of surface like you would when searching for shad. I see a good area with surface activity, I tie boat off to tree as close to the activity! I use locator on evening I don't see surface activity and work my boat along tree lines next to edge of Creek channels. Hope I was helpful , good luck fishing!

OK. I have another question. We went out last weekend and did kind of what you recommended. We were on Fort Cobb. We found a ledge on the main lake with baitfish and feeding predator fish, dropped the lights, and put out our lantern. We instantly had bait circling the boat. We caught a crappie in the first 5 minutes and we were like, "OK here we go..." BUT THAT WAS THE LAST CRAPPIE WE CAUGHT! We had clouds of shad under our boat, which was better than on previous trips. But all we caught were tons of sand bass, hybrids and catfish. At least we were catching something but it wasn't what we were looking for. We tried different depths. Deeper depths caught sandies and hybrids and shallower depths caught catfish and even a couple gar. Do you have any tips for catching crappie instead of other fish? Is it just one of those things, or is there something to look for that may help find more crappie?

JimBob, load that boat with kids so it looks like a Boy Scout camping trip! take your video camera and some water. You will laugh so hard at those kids catching all those fish, you will not care if a crappie ever comes into your boat!

That's a good one, TC. And very, very true. Although with the temps we've had lately, some Gatorade might be the ticket for all the sweating that goes on.

Been my experience over the years that when sandbass or hybrids and catfish move in, it was time to fish another spot. Look for structure like brush piles along a channel or ledge where you had some success before. The piles we have done well on in the winter will be good through the summer to. It is usually pretty easy to draw baitfish with the lights. I drop them down just above the brush and fish the outer edges of the light. Good luck

Thanks Tim, I have never had any luck night fishing piles. So I gave up on it. But maybe they were just in the wrong kinds of places? Maybe if I find a main lake channel or ledge that also has a brush pile or structure that will do the trick. I will keep trying!
