Thank you guys for keeping up with us okies, it was great to be able to compete for a national title after a several year layoff, if you ever get the chance I would highly recommend it Crappiemasters puts on a great event. Not to sound like a broken record but team McClish blew a National Championship we had the fish to win it we just couldn't get them in the boat, first mistake was trying to use a net, haven't used a net in over 20 plus years and rarely lost a fish, secondly (hindsight) after switching to strictly pushing minnows on tournament days (hate minnows...but) we should have went to a much larger and heavier wired hook, the big crappie were just thrashing the living daylights out of our baits (much like a sandbass would) basically almost ripping the rod out of the racks, not only getting a poor hookset but the flex in the hook wasn't hanging on, just did realize it until aftet the fact, so many 2lb plus roll off at the boat......regardless it was a great experience and being the third time to Grenada we have a little more knowledge on how to fish it.....thanks...

Just curious why do you hate minnows? I would like to know your take on them. Thanks

Somewhat of a little sarcasm on the minnow usage, sometimes they are a necessity but my goto method is artificial with pole(s) in hand, but one of the main reasons is just the simple fact of getting bait and trying to keep up with it and just something else thats in the way so to speak, by the end of the day we had perch sized minnows smushed and scattered from one end of the boat to other.....nothing against the useage or those who use live bait, just not my preference.......

Cool that makes sense and I totally get it. Messing with minnow can be a pain in the rear. I'm trying to improve my skills in targeting crappie and really understanding what they are doing and what their behavior is and different ways to put them in the boat.

One thing I have picked up on is in the summer heat June-August messing with minnows is a waste of money and not very productive imho. You are much better of hitting a lot of spots with jigs and finding the bite off of structure and brush piles. The best way to do that is to not waste a lot of time and not beg the fish to bite. Not to mention the fact that the average life span of minnows in the summer is about the amount of time it takes to get them out of the tank and to the boat ramp. LOL
