    Default Spawn

When will they hit the banks? Every year I look at the past posts for various lakes to get an idea of where to go and when. Today I am looking at Kaw. After looking through the post that early spring, these are the first good reports of an actual spawn, not just shallow feeding fish. TimY from 4-5-15

Paul they are moving shallow. Water temp before this front was 65 in the shallows Thursday evening. Caught nice fish less than 2 feet. This cold front may slow them own for a couple of days but they will be going strong by the middle of the week. Caught males and females shallow on jigs and minnows.

And dennishoddy on 4-7-15 Went out to Kaw around noon after a disastrous turkey hunting trip that left me angry.

The water temp was 59 at noon and 63 in the cove I was in by 5pm. Caught a bucket load of males in 2FOW.

Minnow bite. Couldn't buy a bite on a jig.
Kept 5 for dinner tomorrow, and kicked the rest back.

I believe it's going to take some stable weather to get them really going. Some fish are staging in 12 to 14 FOW wanting to come in shallow and others are still deep on the ledges and humps. Water temp reached 54 deg where I was fishing in Kaw yesterday late in the afternoon. All the years I've fished this lake April 1st thru April 20th was always good and some years until May 1st. National Weather Service says El Nino is strongest during the first month (November) and last month (March). I know looking at last years log, water temp was in the 30s at this time so it's up almost 20 deg. The water temp has to reach the mid to upper 50s and stay there in my opinion before they move in consistently. With this above normal temperature, we may be looking at the 3rd or last week of March if the weather pattern holds. Northern Oklahoma is just catching the edges of the storms so as of now don't think heavy rains are gonna be a issue.

I was mid lake Friday afternoon trying out my new trolling motor. Water temp was 48 degrees outside of coves and 50 in the coves. Most of the fish I saw were at 14'.
Dropped a jig into some brush, and caught one 15 1/2" that had immature eggs. Fished about 10 minutes and went on playing with the trolling motor.

Got this off of Arkansas's post. This is NWS forecasted rain totals for this week. This will make the spawn interesting if it happens. Annual trip to central Arkansas may be cancelled if this holds true.

Caught these in a farm pond today. They were totally staking out territory. I was watching them pushing each other off of beds. Caught all of these and about 80 more in less than 5 ft. of water. Granted, this was a pond but I hope lakes aren't far behind.Name: 970.jpg
