Your going to have some tangles especially when you begin no matter what you use. Not stiff but some backbone to them, you must have a soft tip incase you get one hung and do not see it in time. Another tip is to loosen you drags off just enough so the line will go out incase a fish is on and you dont see him. It will happen! I could show you in one day what you will learn in a year if you would like to book a trip? EB

    I will offer my $.02 ...

I started with some cheap rods that were not really well suited for rigging. They were 10' rods and were really too limber. But they worked and I did learn to spider rig with them. I also learned that 12' is better and, in some cases, 14' is better still. I also learned that quality rods designed for rigging make the day much more enjoyable, as do quality rod holders. When it was all said and done, I had a set of useless rods as I upgraded to better ones.

For what my suggestions are worth (probably not much), I would start with 4 rods. That way, you can learn to rig and also learn more about what rods might suit your needs and/or styles best. Other rods mentioned might be great so I am not making any judgements, but of all I have used I like the Crappie Maxx Tightline Special the best. I have a set of George's rods and they work really good too. As for rod holders, take your pick of those mentioned. I am currently using Hiteks.

And for the record, EB got me started spider rigging and probably saved me a year or two in the learning curve.

If I had the time I really would book a trip but if I can get time in the summer I'm definitely trying it out. I almost need a list of things to have and need for this. So toutguys feel free to fill me in.

Still thinking about the rods. I did find those limit rods for for 13.50 each from a wholesaler in South Carolina. I have to go back and find the name. Didn't buy them yet though probably because the rid holders set me back. The 50 dollar rig that someone offered me was a headache waiting to happen. The Terry guy from Cumberland sold me on his setup, he was extremely helpful. So I will at least have an 8 rod setup so if I get for I will have some for later. My cousin in Mississippi has his and said they were great.

Coach...I cant offer much because I am also new the the whole rigging method. I can say that I have 8 of the 12' crappie Maxx Tightline rods and love them. They are stout rods with a painted tip thats very easy to see. As for the holders..I purchased some from EB's friend that builds them and I am very pleased with them. Very strudy..well bult. Easy to deploy and strong enough to catfish from. Have done a lot of that with them. I cant offer anything else. If you have questions then EB and Ranger are two very knowledgeable anglers. Best of luck

I used EB to shorten the curve also, it was money well spent.

I used Tru-turn hooks for years and lost fish because I hooked them in the soft meat at the side of the mouth. I switched to the Matzuo sickle aberdeen hooks and now I sink those hooks in the roof of the mouth...less loss of fish. I use 12' Wally Marshall tightline specials and homemade rod holders much like the Peroitti built. I find I like 1 oz weights about all the time...keeps my line vertical.

I can also say that I have used the GNATS sold on the home page sponsors thread the last 2 days on 4 rods in different colors, and they have caught the bigger fish with the short fish leaving them alone for the most part....Ranger
