    Default flagging jug

    BB,
What is the foam buffer (as required) for? Is it to seal the end cap with the eye hook so water doesn't get in the PVC pipe? Or is it to deaden the sound of the rebar hitting the end cap? Or to protect the end cap from the rebar hit?

With the rebar inside the pipe, I am guessing it would fill with water making it heavier. I think maybe all three are good reasons for using the foam buffer.

Peke - Good question, I don ot use a buffer in my pvc pipe. I am not concerned whether the rebar makes noise. If the glue job is good then the pipe should be tightly sealed. The rebar shifting in the pipe downward acts as a stike indicator. The shift causes the jug to be cocked at an angle thus indicating that a fish is on or the jug has had a hit. If the water is really rough then the rebar might shift causing a false reading.

Josh - Personally the biggest cat I have caught on this style of jug setup is around 25 pounds.

    Josh,

The buffer is to keep the rebar from damaging the PVC over time. The repeated thumping the rebar gives the cap each time it tips can be hard on the cap. The foam eases it just a little.

You don't want the rebar to 'stay in place'. It should slide back and forth inside the PVC. When a fish hits, the rebar will slide down the PVC making the whole thing tip up like CG described. When you see one 'flagging' (standing on end) then you know you have a fish on.

I finally had time to replace my water pump impeller on my 18 hp Nissan last night and change the lower unit lube. My old V boat cat boat is ready to spread terror in the hearts of bluecats in Kaw Lake and Hugo. The jugs are itching to get wet and the hotdogs are crying to be cut up. I have heard too much about how good cheap wiennies are so i am going to put them to the test.

    Default jugline

    CG,

When we used the weiners we had chicken and beef. They didn't seem to like the chicken ones. Wal-Mart in Claremore has Monster Noodles for $4.00 so I'd guess other Wal-Marts will have them. The Monster noodles were on one aisle and the regular noodles were on a different aisle.

What are crosslock swivels? (Is it the same as interlock swivels?)

    Okie Don,

I found some multi-purpose Poly cord at Lowe's. Working load 50 lbs. 100% Polypropylene. Is this okay or do I need to get a braided cord strictly for underwater use?

Do the knots stay in well on the poly cord? What kind of knots?

ALL- Can you only use these for catfish? Can they be used on any lake in Oklahoma?

Heading to Bass Pro tomorrow since I can't find any large swivels at my local Wally World.

    Thanks for the help!

    Hey Peke,

I'm not familiar with that cord by name (I'd probably know it if I saw it), but it will probably work. In times past, I've used just about anything that I could get through the hook of an eye. Now days, I use heavy mono in the 50lb plus range. I have considered using Super Braids, but the line is a lot smaller and could cut your hand with a hard fighting fish.

I tie regular cinch knots in smaller line and simple overhand knots with larger line.

Peke - crosslock swivels are the same as interlock swivels. You want BRAIDED nylon cord. Please go back to my post on what I use to build my jugs and follow the instructions and you will have a fine set of jugs that will provide you years of good service. The package says NYLON BRAIDED TWINE Size #48 should be available at BPS or Academy. This is tricky.... look for the word braided on the package. Size 48 has a strength of 260 lbs. It runs around $10.00 for 132 yds. Twisted nylon twine is 1/3 cheaper, spend the extra money and get braided only. You will not be sorry.
I use size 1/0 or 2/0 interlock swivels on my dropper lines and 3/0 barrel swivels on my main line. I tie all swivels with a palomar knot. I use 50# test Berkeley Big Game mono for my droppers.

These can be used on all Okla lakes. A person is allowed 20 jugs/person and your name and # must be on each jug. So you and your husband can run 40 jugs. I place the droppers 5' apart starting at the bottom and working up with the last swivel 5' from the surface.
Lake Eufaula is an excellant lake for jugging. Your juglines should be between 15' and 25' long for summertime jugging. These jugs are placed on the edge of the river or creek channel in those depths. 10' -12 footers work for winter jugging starting around 10/15 until 3/15. you get bigger fish during the winter.

If you have additional questions then send me a PM with your cell. You can caught a lot of catfish doing this and have fun doing it but it is work.

Peke - I almost forgot get the monster noodles in orange or yellow or Lime green. They seem to be the easiest to see at a distance. Buy plenty of monsters because I cannot find them in OKC Walmarts. I would be tickled if I could locate and buy 3 or 4 extras just to have.
