My 2 cents isbad flooded waters washes the spawn and fish down stream. Could be wrong though but seemed better spawns and fishing back in drought days.

For what it's worth one of our biologists put together a video on the spawn. Basicallysaid that even with high water as long as lake stays up for at least 5 days it doesn't usually hurt in fact it helps...aaid that once eggs are fertilized within 5-7 days they are on their own....with higher wardwe actually provides more cover for them...

Since we are on the subject of crappie spawn I have a question. Several years ago in late December to January I witnessed a lot of stunned 2"-3" crappie coming through the generators below the dam. Now the most recent ODWC fish survey on Kaw (from 2008 I believe) says that a crappie on Kaw will be 11" or larger by the fall of their second year. If that's true wouldn't a crappie spawned that spring be bigger than 2"-3"? Was I witnessing the result of a fall spawn? Can that happen?

Two winters ago in the Dec/Jan time frame I was cast netting shad at the back end of one of the oxbows on the Navigation Channel and I caught about 10 or 15 very small 2 in or so crappie in the cast net. The consensus seemed to be that they were stunted and from a pond that had overflowed into the river during high water. I still wonder if maybe they came from late fall spawn.

I do not believe there is a fall spawn.

Interesting topic to discuss. I've been all over the internet today looking at different opinions on the subject of how the spawn is effected by rising and falling waters in reservoirs.
Lots of opinions, but not a consensus among any of the subjects I looked at. It all depended on how fast it rose, and how long it stayed at the high level and how fast it fell.

I've always thought crappie return to where they hatched to spawn once mature. Idk, where I got the idea possibly from learning about the salmon migration and spawn. Haha...

If that holds true, big if, then a crappie hatched in rising waters of the spring rains would return looking for similar depths to spawn.

So the crappie on kaw (could) adapt to spawning in deeper water due to years of eggs being hatched in deeper, rising waters.

If the spawn is a total bust in the spring, I could see the mature crappie spawning in the fall.

Has any of the Local crappie mafia found any evidence of this?
Mature females caught in early fall with eggs or on nest?

You will find crappie with eggs in them in the Fall but it is for the spring spawn NOT a fall spawn.

I have caught male crappie in full black spawning color in standing timber on the lower (clearer) end of kaw in late June. About 12 foot deep in the trees. That is only 2 months removed from fall. So, if they dont grow quite as fast as the more seasonally spawned fish due to having less than the optimal spring food, you could easily get that size fish at that time of year. Also, I have used a cast net to catch perch for bait at lake Jackson outside Mounds for years, I catch 1-3 inch crappie by accident all thru summer up until fall, sometimes a whole netful of them.
