Thread: Choice Of Rod??

    Question Choice Of Rod??

I Have Been Using A 5'6 Berkely Lightning Rod Matched With An Abu Garcia Cardinal 100 Reel. I Am Pleased With The Performance But It Is Getting Older And Not Running As Smooth As It Once Did, Maybe Because It Has Been Pulled In The Lake Twice Once By Anchor Rope And Once By A 4lb Bass But I Got It Back Both Times. Looking To Add A New Weapon To The Arsenal And Wondering If Anyone Had Any Suggestions? I Mostly Fish With Small Jigs And Plastics. Do Alot Of Casting And Retrieving. Any Suggestions Would Be Great.

I like a longer rod for casting. I prefer a 6'6" to a 7'6" ML rod in high mod graphite. You might find a Berkley Bionics rod in that size and power that would be great for casting for crappie and not to awful expensive. Other good options would be All Star or Gander Guide Series. For the money you'll get a great casting rod.

I have that same reel Abu reel. It does the job for a decent price. I don't have the money now, but next year I am going to upgrade to a Diawa Tournament SS. I think that is about the best spinning reel on the market today.

My favorite combo I ever had for casting light jigs was a cheap Browning 5'6" ultralite rod w/a little Browning ultralite reel. My dad got it for me for Christmas a few years ago and it turned out to be a great little outfit. I broke the rod last year at Weiss when a slab about pulled it out of the boat. I had it laying on the deck with a jig barely in the water while I retied a float on another rod. The crappie came up and grabbed the jig, the rod slid under the deck cleat. When I picked it up, it broke. I have yet to find a rod and reel I like as much. I have the reel on a 10' BnM Sam's Super Sensitive. Very nice rod. I use it to flip and dip jigs or float rigs. BnM has some shorter rods for casting. It would be tough to go wrong with them.

    Spinning
This is a dandy two-piece, ultra-light spinning rod, designed for lakes and ponds where longer casts and lighter line lead to success. The combination of the 7-foot length and the ultra-light action makes it a good deep-water panfish rod. And if you like to fish bubble/fly combinations for trout, this rod will certainly do the trick, especially with a smaller bubble. It's also a nice rod for drifting single salmon eggs ( or imitation ) for trout in small streams. All in all, we consider this the perfect 4-pound test rod.

    Default for the money

For the money you can't beat shakespear microlite (5'6" to 7') from Walmart for $14 and for a reel BPS sells a Shimano IX2000R (smaller 1000 and larger 4000 models also) spinning reel for $10. You will be surprised what $25 will get you.

Wow! Who spends $270 for a crappie rod? I don't even shell out that kind of money for a musky rod. I hope to get a custom musky rod in a year or two for about $170.00. I would never pay more than $40 for a crappie rod as it simply isn't necessary. There is a boat load of options in IM6, IM7, IM8 and higher graphite that come with great components and cost $60 or less.

    I like Outlaw crappie rods.

For a reasonable price, you can get the Berkley Cherrywood rods...

I have a couple Lightning Rods too, but I prefer a 6'6' to 7' rod, but I'm sort of tall.

There are a TON of quality rods out there at every price level, and they will all catch you fish.

I guess I have my priorties in the right place.. Or a screw loose one!!! You pay that kind of money for balance, sensitivity beyond your imagination, thru the handle blank.. ect. ect. I could go on.. Don't want to sound like an infomercial since I have no affiliation with the company... Plus, fishing is my passion so thats what I spend my $$$ on.. Why do people spend $35,000.00+ on crappie boats when you can catch a crappie out of a jon boat? I'm sure there have been more crappie caught out of a 14ft. jon boat then there will ever be caught out those $35k jobs.. But, If I had my choice give me first a first class ticket...:D

thanks for all the input. Everyone seems to prefer the longer rods. How much does that improve the castability and what type of line. I usually use 4lb smooth cast.
