Default Cold Weather Crappie -BASS PRO 2/12/2008

    Cold Weather Crappie Fishing
Come check out tips and pointers from our resident Crappie expert for cold-weather fishing.

    7pm in the conference room.

I seen this on Bass Pro's Web Page. Not sure who the expert is teaching the class, but I may stop in to see what he has to say.

It is probably mike Bright he is probably the best crappie angler around here. He could probably catch a crappie in a puddle HAHA! I tought one class over there around novemeber. It is definitely worth going.

I'm not sure about him being the best crappie angler in the area, but he did sound very knowledgeable about crappie. He mentioned being friends with the Tournament team of CAPPS & COLEMAN. A person could learn a lot from those guys. Another thing, that I thought was impressive, he said he caught 65 13" crappie in one day at East Fork. He should be fishing tournaments, then he could make a little money doing something he enjoys. I don't think anyone had a stringer of 13" fish in any of the tournaments last year at East Fork that includes Crappie USA, Buckeye Crappie Challenge and Boars Head.

Also, I went to the class you mentioned around November, I think over all you did a good job.

Good luck to you this year.

I tried to convience him to fish tournaments but he says he just likes to fish for fun which is understandable. Good luck to you to this year.

65 13" crappie from East Fork in one day??!! Not to be a jerk but I think his ruler's broke HaHa. If that's true then he could win every tournament held on East Fork, at least since I've been fishing them. Maybe that's why I have so much trouble catching the 12" plus slabs on EF when it matters. He has 'em all in his freezer. A lot of the Boars Head regulars are darn good crappie fishermen who know that lake better than anybody out there, and I don't think any one of them could make that claim. I don't know the guy, and I am not calling him a liar or anything, but if it's true, I want to follow him around for a couple days and see what I've been doing wrong.
This weather's gotta break soon....right? Gotta get back on the water before I go crazy. Just 44 days till the first Boars Head tournament.............

Wow! 65 crappie over 13" in one day of fishing! I've never even heard of that on Kentucky Lake or any of the big lakes down south. I'm sure it has been done somewhere, but I wouldn't think that has been done too many times on EF. I've fished EF several times and it has some quality fish, but I have noticed an abundance of fish in the 10-12.5" range. Seems like anything over 13" is a hard to come by for me at EF anyway. I guess maybe it could be a case where all the bigger fish schooled up in a particular area. I believe it would have to be because if 1 fish out of every 5 that he caught measured 13" (which would be an awesome ratio by my experience) he would have had to caught 325 fish that day to cull and get 65 - 13 inchers!

I don't know about you guys, but I don't want anyone that good fishing tourneys and taking all my money! Just kidding. It's only fun if you compete against the best there is.

The sun is out. The temps are bearable. Time to get out on the lake and try to find all those 13"ers for myself and stop talking about it.

Back in the days. During the mid to late seventies , partner and I used to do big crappie like this at Pymatuning. We used to camp up there the last week in May every year ( tradition thing ). We used to AVERAGE a hundred crappie apiece almost every day. Along with other species. These crappie were all well over 12 inches.

Every evening while we were cleaning what we kept other campers would offer to pay us to guide them. We declined all offers and let me tell you some of these offers were more than I made a day at work. Nobody else at the entire campground came close to what we were catching. Our secret was to use huge minnows . Ones that you would not usually even consider for crappie fishing. In fact thats how we discovered this . We used to seine our own minnows. One day all we had was huge ones due to weather conditions. We decided to walleye/ bass fish that day. The huge crappie there jumped all over us and the rest was history.
