    Default East harbor

Headed to east harbor campground On the 19th for seven days. I have a 17 ft lund with full windshield a 115 and a 9.9 kicker. Looking for anything that bites. Never been to Ohio before. I would like to go for crappie if lake gets too windy for the walleye.

What is best way to get crappie what type of area should I target I have a few long rods and can spider rig on my boat. What is rod limit there

Sorry for all questions and no info. I post now and then on IL page. I have posted less Lately as I haven't caught much crappie and it is a pain to post photos anymore

    Gizmo,

You should be hitting the fishing just about right. I have fished the big lake some, but most of my experience has been in West Harbor, East Harbor, Sandusky Bay, and Portage River. I have found the Bass and Crappie to be excellent in all these areas. What I like about these areas is that is primarily shallow water fishing (less than 10 foot) and mostly visible cover. Here are a few things to key in on in these areas.

Crappie-docks, especially those with poles. Dead end channels at the very back. Boat lift structures. I use a small jig (1/32 oz) fished 2'-3' deep under a small bobber.

Bass-parallel cast channel banks with crankbaits and spinnerbaits.

Have fun. I have had many crappie days in the 50-75 fish with some nice sized fish. I have also had many bass fishing days in the 20-30 fish too with many fish in the 3-5 lbs range.

I have a 2-3 day camping/fishing trip up there on my list. I spent a few days in Mississippi this spring so I'm looking at a new destination next year. Crappie fishing up there sounds like a lot of fun. Hopefully the dock owners don't give the fisherman too much grief about fishing around them (provided, of course, we aren't damaging their property).

I've been in the area all weekend. East Harbour is doing well because it has clear water. Been averaging about 20 a day which is fairly low for this time of year. By next week it should pick up. The Portage River looks like chocolate milk which is turning the fish off. You should do well

Got here at midnight. Got on water about 2pm. It was windy today. I got one nice crappie in east harbor. I was in a tiny channel by mobile home park. I was using a crappie magnet chartreuse with 1/32 head under their panfish float. I got many bites did switch to a black and chartreuse panfish magnet. Got two small gills and a 13" largemouth. I could not let of trollimg motor for more then 30!seconds without crashing due to wind. Not the best report but is first time here. I fish many places and have found the more times I go to a place my success goes down sometimes so why no try somewhere new. I will be here until Friday will post again hopefully with more of a report.

Crappie magnet was 3 ft to 5 Ft below float. Water was 62 to 64. Seemed stained

I was there today as well. I should have stayed home. I tried the mobile home Park for about 5 minutes and couldn't stay anchored. I went over to the state park cove which was out of the wind and caught bluegills. Eventually tried to find some crappie but only could find rock bass. Ended up giving up and drove back home. That wind was ridiculous!

I didn't crappie fish today. Last night while crappie fishing I got bass on the crappie jigs. On way out to lake today saw guys getting bass at harbor mouth next to current. I went four miles out of east harbor got walleyes white perch sheep head and cats in 25 foot. Had to come in as I got seasick. My wife learned to drive boat today as a result. Baits were drifter crawler harness on bottom bouncer and Erie dearie with crawler crawler castes

The dock owners were good about fishing not like in Illinois where harbors are posted keep out with many legal warnings

Water in harbor dropped a couple feet yesterday when wind stopped blowing water into it

Was there Friday- Saturday - Sunday ...... crappie bite was def slow...... we got bored with fishing that hard for them ( and fighting the wind ) and went bass fishing instead ....... north / northeast wind killed the crappie bite in the Harbors (blows cooler lake water into them ) got a few nice crappie in west harbor that was def blacked out...... caught a ton of bass

I should have tried west harbour as well. I've never fished it but when I was leaving East I saw it was calm.
