I had planed to do a lot of fishing the next few days as the wife in in Indy helping our sister-in-law, well the Dr. office and wife have me sidelined as I have a bout with bronchitis or worse pneumonia. It's to nice out to have this so it looks like with the weather coming in the next four or five days is my chance to get better. The spawn is off till get over this !!!!!!!!
May all the fish tales you catch be longer than the ones you tell !

Made it out last night with the wife for a few short hours. Beautiful evening and great company.
We didn't slay them but ended with an assortment of crappie, bluegil and 1 little channel cat. Biggest crappie was 11". All went back.
Water surface temp was in the low 60's. Everything was caught in less than 10ft.

Soon the spawns will be over and the entire lake will key on shad again....besides the various insect hatches, and abundance of easy fry to eat, most of the predators will be looking for a perfect sized smelly sushi.
I netted a 3 inch sushi this past Saturday and since the sun was out, decided to show coloration and iridescence, so you understand matching the hatch.
Year after year, after the spawns, your best bet for catching fish is to provide a wounded or dying imitation of a shad.
Fish are looking for that one big easy meal each time out, to help conserve energy by suspending with a full belly and not having to hunt. Big meals will sustain them through the heat of the day when they are burning alot of calories, or when they need to put on fat for fall and winter.
The soft rayed shad is the perfect high protein and fat food for fish....and CJ is loaded with them.

But since the spawns are on...I decided to limit both Crappie and WB on Saturday, during and after the rains. I knew the lake would go above pool and temps for action...the plan was correct.
It didn't matter what I threw or what shape or color....I could count the number of casts on both hands, that did not end with a fish.
WB were subsurface and wanted a speedy retrieve, and the Crappie were deep and wanted a medium stop and go or twitchy retrieve....same areas of the lake, same lures etc for both, only depth and speed were different.

Largest Crappie was 13.5...largest WB was a 17 inch stud that went back in with the Big females, and the big female Crappie.

The Crappie were smoking everything, and headshaked and fought all the way in. They were taking 3 inch swimmers with ferocity.
The WB females were spraying eggs when lifting out of the water...the males were gleaking as they were pulled up.
Looks like a lake spawn also this year for WB

I had a blast...but I cleaned fish till 11:30pm and had to get up at 4am to work Sunday.
Working 80 hours and fishing is insanity at its finest....but fun!
