Just an idea for troubleshooting, try putting the engine in neutral and either pulling the pull rope to see if a piston or ring is bad causing friction. Or maybe turning the prop by hand in gear with kill switch off ignition.

    Default jeep guy

Johnson huh? I got one. Pull starter, check and clean armature (always good) then check brushes. Mine did it too. U and partner(s) coming to swap meet. It will be special

I have made sure the battery is fully charged - checked all the wire connections to the starter to make sure they are clean and tight - cleaned the shaft on the starter that the smaller toothed wheel rides up and down on ( it was stuck up on the fly wheel at the lake ) - still getting the same results.

    Question

    1) how can I be sure it's the starter that's bad before I go plop down the cabbage for a new one?

    2) is there a good online source for a new starter ( the marina close to me said it's 250.00 for a new one and it'd take 3 to 5 days to get )

    3) is there a particular starter to stay away from (aftermarket-brand-etc)

thanks in advance for any feedback, God bless all

No pull start / rope on the motor......

Cleaned all connections ,Did some checking with a volt meter , jumped the sylanoid ...... Pretty confident it's the starter ..... Took starter to J&N auto electric, they tested and said starters bad...... They can rebuild or get a new aftermarket one..... Not a big price difference between either, new aftermarket has better warranty ......

Harry's partner, thanks for the invite , but won't be able to make it..... Try and keep T-bone out of jail.....

T-bone , been sore lippin em in dad's boat , he's got a hds10 with structure scan, I'm finding all the rest of your stake beds I didn't have wpts on....

I no pull start either (dude its a 150)..sorry for confusion....pull starter off the motor and take it apart, clean armature then check brushes....Johnson brushes will break off...can't see it unless you disassemble it completely. That's what causes short/heat. I will rebuild it for 20 less than J&N and I'll get brushes from them...get it? PS...pull starter, I meant to pull starter off motor, not pull start, my bad, sorry for being vague. Sometimes I type what I'm thinking without considering the reader.

Sorry u guys can't make it to swap meet. Send Jr. Wick should try to come too! It will be a blow out with perhaps 40-50 fisherman....that's not counting the card players and MMA participants/events.. I will have to have three card tables and have Mike deliver hoggies all night long.Try, if you cant its OK, ur always welcome James.

Harryspartner ....... LOL oh I got it now...... I will prob take a crack at rebuilding it then...... I did clean the shaft the little gear that engauges the fly wheel rides on ...... That gear was sticking up on the fly wheel , not going down..... Still no dice ( it does engauge and disengage like it should now ). It's off now so I think I'll start taking it apart and see if I can do something with it ....... I would send JR , but he's not so JR anymore..... He'd prob hurt the midget Mexican in the MMA events ha ha

    James,
I had same problem with my starter a few years back, took it up to Dayton Started,
they tested disassembled it & found bad connection on either brushes or ground wire inside started.
Cleaned connection & worked great, at NO CHARGE!!
I'am sure if you call them they will quote rebuild cost to you.
I would check all connections inside if you disassemble it, maybe same as mine & easy fix.
    If not call them.

Good luck, see you on water at EF!!
