Thread: Fiberglass boat rigging

Bought my first fiberglass boat and about have everything off my old aluminum boat.Anyone have any rigging tips,like how do you mount the rod holders.Do you use the same screws or something special when installing on fiberglass.

Use same screws, tip get you a self tapping screw same size as mounting screws. Use it to make each hole then install your mounting screws with a small dab of JBWeld on each screw. It will help seal if there is any wood involved and will anchor the screws. If drilling holes in gelcoat put a double layer of duct tape down and drill through it. Helps keep it from splintering. Mounting finders on anything thin make you a aluminum backing plate to reinforce. Or at least use as large a body washer as you can.

Take your time. Rig everything you can temporary just to se how it sits. Double face tape glue cleans off much easier than filling holes. Beautiful boat. Proud for you. Your going to love it.

That's a fine ride, you are going to love it.

I use a countersink drill bit to keep the gelcoat from popping loose, and it will if you don't, then after predrilling the hole the correct size put a drop of oil in the hole. The heat generated from putting the screw into fiberglass can cause the fiberglass resin to seize the screw and then it will strip the head or break off.
