That was part of the deal in 1973 when the backwater levee was built. Guess they spent that money on something else.

I'm no expert and probably wrong, but the way I understand it is that all the back water is somewhat "trapped" and is slow to respond to a crest and or fall in the actual river and that's why the pumps are needed

The lake topped 98 feet this morning and has essentially leveled out with the backwater. MS River is cresting right now, will sit idle at around 50 feet for a couple more days, and then slowly start dropping. The Steele Bayou control structure will be opened when the river goes to 49 feet so then backwater will slowly start to drop then. If the rain will give us a break, I figure at best around July 4th before the will be able to start lowering the lake. Maybe by Labor Day everything will be back to normal. But millions of dollars worth of damage will be left behind.

your right but the problems this year was that because of all the local rain we had earlier in the year had the back water flood control areas full before the river ever started coming up. when the river water got here there was no where to put it. the pump system would allow the corps to pump the flood control areas out into the river before the river ever rises. the river has actually been much higher than this in the past without near as much destruction
