Did you put em in your own water. I always bring my own water and I've found I lose far less minnows. I've always stayed clear of detergents when cleaning my bucket, just wipe down with water, but that might not be enough in your case.
Got a bad batch of minnows the other day..all died before we got the boat in the water..what's the best way to steralize the bucket...foam insert

No..their water..water look kind of brown..actually like it had not been treated...I've rinsed my bucket several times since.
That happened to me one day last year in m Engel. Half were dead before I put on my first one.
If you're just trying to get the rotten smell out, put left over coffee grounds in a jar lid or on aluminum foil. Leave it in the bucket for 24 hrs with the lid closed.
Tell'em I'll be there.
Wash out with salt water , rinse good , fill up with water and let sit in the sun for a day .
Boatbottom thanked you for this post
I used to clean our bait tanks with Simple Green and then rinse them well, we always added bait saver to the water as well.

Keep your line tight !
1. Use distilled vinegar to clean. It takes out all the smell and nasties. 1 gallon vinegar and finish filling with water. Scrub and let sit for 24 hours. Dump and rinse. Ready for minnows again.
2. Wash with dawn soap. Dump. Rinse. Add 1 box baking soda(arm and hammer). Fill with water. Let stand for 24 hours.
Vinegar is a non toxic cleaner. I clean my livewells at the end of each season. Bleach works too but spills are a disaster. Bleach evaporates.
Baking soda neutralizes soaps.
