    Default questions for mechanics

Month ago on the way home driving about 45 and I heard a short hissing noise from what sounded like the right side of my engine compartment. Truck (99 chevy with 4.3) shut off. I coasted into a side street. Few minutes (1-2) passed and I restarted it and drove home. Been driving my personal truck since. Yesterday I used it to move a couple of my boats around and it ran ok but the air would not get cool. My theory now is something ruptured and let the Freon escape in a flash. Then the truck wouldn't run on the Freon mixture under the hood. Any chance that is correct or am I just wishing. Haven't taken it to the shop yet because I am not sure it will make it.n

The two loudest sounds are a gun that goes bang when it is supposed to go click and one that goes click when it is supposed to go bang.

    Now it won't run?
'99 Chevy, same as my '01 GMC. Everything is on the right side for heat and air.
On the way home from Mammoth Springs a couple of years ago I could smell anti freeze in the cab. I looked at utube videos on how to change the heater core. My son and I changed it out in about 4 hours along with cabin air filter and all the O rings needed for about $150. Wish I had seen the video of cutting the slot in the cabinet to change the filter without pulling the whole unit before hand, not after it was reinstalled. Bad design for a filter that needs to be changed every couple of years.
Going to different shops to have the ac pumped down, checked and freon added I found prices from $40 to $260.

It ran while I moved boats around. Don't know if it will run all time. That's what scares me.

Since your ac doesn't cool turn it off. If you had a blowout most likely you lost oil that the compressor needs.
Run your finger at all the connections looking for oil. It would be best to change all the O rings.

Have someone follow you. Run it down to Truman and back at high speeds. Punch it every now and then.

No worries on that...automotive AC compressor will not come on if it has lost the freon. Limit switches will not allow it.

What might have happened was your AC compressor locked up killed your truck engine and broke compressor shaft. So in this case truck engine is ok and you need a new AC compressor.

Gomer, get under hood and check to see if drive belt is still on. Don't think freon under hood would cause it to die since your intake air comes from grill area or right fender well. Like G said compressor locking up could kill the motor and it could have broken belt. That's why it will run but only for short time. I don't know off top of my head if that compressor runs off main drive belt or has seperate compressor belt. My 96 5.7 just has 1 belt that drives everything.

    A serpentine belt like mine.
Did you look under the hood while engine was running?
