    Question Help on replacing HB898

I contacted HB to see about repair and was informed that they no longer support the unit. I need something to replace it but I dont want SI just DI and map card slot. I will have it on trolling motor, so SI is not any good for me. Also does any of the new HB use the Navionics Map Card ? Appreciate any and all input and info

    Thanks

    Larry

The Helix units are Navionics compatible, all the map cards now come with micro SD cards that fit into a normal SD (full size adapter) if needed. My Helix 10 Sonar GPS is full size SD, My 9 Mega Chirp SI is micro SD. I run lakemaster map cards, just a personal preference. Depending on your budget I think a Gen 1 Helix 9 DI would suit you well, they run about $700. If your fishing over brush piles and need the extra clarity then the mega could be useful. I personally think the mega shines the best with side imaging. A 10" or a 12" unit is nice to have, but often is not necessary the 9 inch screen is pretty big and can be seen by most eyes, I ran a Helix 7 for two years and the screen wasn't to small for me. It all depends on your budget and what you intend to do with the unit. Good luck!

I went Helix but after fishing with BRM would go the other way . Fishing with bill's units Lowrance/Hummingbird side by side at the steering and up front Was an eye opening experience . Bill claims they both offer good things the other don't but the highlighted fish reveal and more defined down image was a deal changer for me .

Not to mention that Lowrance sonar is far superior to the birds. The Birds can’t track the bottom very well in shallow water. My birds show anywhere from 1500’ deep to 3’ deep in shallow water (15’ or less). They also don’t show the depth running down the lake like my Lowrance units do. I have the Solix units, but had the same issue with the Helix units I had on one of my other demo boats. That being said, I do like the 360, the Lakemaster contour changabilty, and several other features the birds have. Their SI and DI aren’t any better than Lowrance when you run them side by side, and like Coach said, the Fish Reveal on the Lowrance DI is awesome and will be coming out on a update or two for the SI!!!!! If you doubt what I’m telling you, you’re welcome to take a look for yourself on my boat. I run both units and can show you the differences, or the Lack Of.

BTW, my Solix GPS/Chirp sonar unit on the front freezes up every 5 minutes, and I literally have to disconnect the power cord to reboot it. When it freezes up, the power button doesn’t even work. Bad unit from the factory I guess. I’ve had way more problems with the birds than I have with my Lowrance units. The birds take longer to boot up and are much slower connecting to the network. One more thing, the fishing range setting on the Lakemaster is nice, but it’s also available on the Navionics cards and Lowrance units. The fishing range is white instead of green on the Lowrance. Won’t be long before Navionics has the contour adjustments either and a Panoptics/360 type device will be coming soon on Lowrance.

Last but not least. NEITHER unit will make you a better fisherman. I’m proof of that for sure. The ONLY thing that makes you a better fisherman is more Time On The Water. PERIOD!!!!!
