The auto feature works when the bobbin gets wet /dissolves and sets off a firing pin that punctures the air cylinder. The vest I have has been used 6-7 years and has never accidentally inflated. It has seen heavy rain several times and when it gets wet I dry it out in the truck or camp. The comment about Amazon being the place to buy rearm kits, bobbins,or cylinders is dead on.I bought 3 sets and have never had to use them. It would be hard to go back to wearing a conventional jacket but do carry them in the boat.

I seen a video about two game warden's that hit a log on a lake, and threw both of them out of the boat. Both warden's had the auto inflatable's on, but only one opened up. I don't have one, and won't buy one, I know my regular vest will work, you hope the other will...jmo....

The cylinders are only good for 5 years. Be careful.

The vest I bought were between '91 and '04, can't remember when. I thought there was a time limit on the cylinders, no date on them. So I checked the vest deploying the cylinders last year. They worked fine.

I bought two, and whoever else gets in the boat gets to use the spare... I really forget that I have one on...

    Default Inflatable pfd

FYI. The inflatable life vests must be worn at all times while you're on the water according to the law. You can take them off if you have a regular life jacket onboard.
