Well I have not added water to a battery in so long I completely forgot about using distilled water so I'm curious to see what kind of effect it truly has on the life of the battery.

I can see where if you have a lot of iron or minerals in your water it could be bad but anyhow so far so good.

"G", do you have a water softener on your house? Just curious because I always use distilled water in my batteries but I wondered if softened water would be better. Since either salt or potassium is used to soften water, and both are good electrolytes, would it be better than distilled water?

No...dont have a water softener. I would think tho that salt would be a no no....corrosive to the lead plates.

Chris, this is just an opinion but I would thing any mineral added to the water would be pulled out and deposited on the plates. That is what causes the drop off in ability to fully charge a battery. Plus that is the reason distilled water is recomended. Pure water with no minerals in it to create scale. Some tap water is so clean it will work fine in batteries.
Here's a heads up....charge your batteries before you fill/top them off. Been told to never fill/top off THEN put a full charge on them. Just sain.....
What's the reasoning on that.
