    Default Question Time

As winter months approach I would think that the fish are gonna get tite on some cover somewhere. I have been rigging my rigs with the weight on the bottom, seemed the easiest as a beginner, easy to tell when its on the bottom and seemed to get hung less.
Am I right in assuming that its better to rig with the bait on the bottom when fishing stakebeds or brush off the bottom of the lake.
By the way, I know some think my questions are stupid or get mad when I decide to do it different than the way suggested or whatever but there are alot of folks that read the threads that gain knowledge from yalls answers. Yall have helped me alot, to the point I feel like I can go to the lake and catch a mess of fish most of the time. Thanks to the ones that respond, your help is greatly appreciated.

It don't matter. Use what ya like. I tie my rigs both ways, weight on bottom, and in the middle to. Lots of fish go deep in winter, but not all. As always, they're where the bait and cover is in their comfort zone.

You already know that the weather and environmental conditions rule where the fish will be, and how they will react. Surface Temp, Wind Direction, Sunlight Penetration, Cloud Cover, Cold Fronts, Rain, Water Color, Water Depth, BAIT Location, etc. It's hard to put together some days, but withstanding the cold fronts, and changing conditions, they hold their patterns pretty good all winter, kinda like right now. The electronics you have should eliminate bad water, and give you the basic info you'll need to locate the fish. I just wish the electronics would tell ya which ones are biting on any given day. ;-)

Don't worry about your rigs, that's the easy part.

One more tidbit. If you concentrate more on boat control in rough conditions, your catch ratio will increase two fold. Boat Control is the number one factor in becoming a good spider rigger. Anybody can do it when conditions are good!!!!!!

John, on Kentucky lake those guys use a bottom bouncing rig with a bell sinker on the bottom for fishing stumps, brush piles and stake beds. Usually with 2 hooks but sometimes with just one about a ft above sinker. They use the weight to feel along the bottom for structure and keep bait just above. They do this with a pole in each hand. You can use the same basic premis spider rigging. I have gone to making up rigs with the same sliding weight and just one hook below the weight when fishing shallow structure to reduce hang ups. No kind of expert here but just found that works better for me. Still fish a jig tipped with minnow most of the time.
