we live at the base of Crowders Mnt., we are usually and I say usually safe, we took a big hit about two years ago on July 4th weekend. We do get or share of lightning from time to time.

    John 21:3
Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.

And we act like this Nightstalking thing is new.

For some excitment, read the next verse. A special guest arrived, they filled their coolers and had a fish fry on the beach...in the morning. My kind of people.- Bowfin

I hear that. Im up in Sherrills Ford/ Denver area. I cant beleive all the tornados in the area this year. Looks as if it will be a record year on the local and national level tho. Weve been spared this year thus far. Lightening was bad for us the past couple years. The past three years weve had lightning strike 3 times on 4 acres. Twice in the same night. First bolt didnt do any damage, second bolt killed a big poplar and blew out a fence charger, blew the fuse and went on through and got the whole thing. Got lucky, I was on the front porch (it's covered and almost inclosed), watching the storm from a distance out over the south end of the lake, and first bolt hit the fence out front...well me and the dog fought to get through the door back in the house...got sat down on the couch 45sec later and that one hit the poplar out back. Had a bolt last year strike the fence and run a wire across into the shop and blow a chunk out of the block wall and left black marks on the wood framing near the boxing at the roof on the inside. Lucky it didnt catch fire. I was outside shutting the garage door when that one hit. I hate the stuff.

Perdy gardens by the way. Our dirt is so poor around the house, can hardly get a weed to grow.

get it lookin' how you want and stay on top of it!......
I plant everything far enough apart so I can get my tiller between it all, do the close up work by hand....it's really not to bad if you piddle around a little every day, but let it get out of control and it can turn into a jungle quick.

fishin' and gardenin' is pretty much what our lives revolve around

I use mulch of some kind on most of my garden, except for corn and beans.
I've used straw, grass clippings, newspapers and black plastic over the years.
Whatever was available. I now have a pretty much unlimited supply of cardboard boxes, and decided to try them this year for my cool weather crops. Used leftover bricks from house construction to hold them down until they got wet. They look kinda funny, but they keep the weeds out. Still have to weed between the plants though.
From the left, broccoli, cauliflower, bibb lettuce and snow peas. About a month ago.

I had some weed barrier leftover from building our growing area and used that for the warm weather crops. Here's a tomato from a month+ ago.

Looks good Shellquacker...just a shot in the dark, but I dont know about them card board boxes when it gets dry. Seems like that many would soak up any available rain. Moisture...but from what I understand...yall aint had no trouble with rain up in ur area.

This is the first year I've tried this. We could use some rain now for the corn etc. When you lift the box edge, it's damp earth with worms and plant roots. I was hoping they'd break down enough to till in, but it looks like I might use them for a fall crop too. I'm not totally sold on the idea yet, but I have to dispose of these boxes somehow, and this seemed like a good way to do it.

Oh yeah. Looks like a good way to keep the weeds down and have a place to kneel on to pick the garden and pull what weeds come up

Those are some well cared for gardens and looking very healthy & productive.
Will try remember to post a pic or 2 of mine. It is in transition kinda-I timed my planting so that my spring stuff-salad, greens, peas, etc are about done and will become cornfield. Snap peas, lettuce, potatoes, onions producing well right now.
I love to garden so gotta say great post!!:D
