Default Continuation from my other post

Talking about the things me and my old mare have seen and done.
155th anniversary battle of Shiloh, fallen timbers. We got put into line with Terry’s Texas Rangers, which was an honor. Waiting in line just under crest of the hill, battle opened with a battery of our 12lb smooth bores BEHIND us on a slight rise, simulating lobbing over our heads.
Man, you could feel the concussion slap you on the back! Sat there through several volleys before getting order to charge over the hill. Name: IMG_2519.jpg

Takes a pretty disciplined horse to stand fast under that kind of bombardment

Getting last orders before the big mass charge Saturday. Colonel says put em into briars, take no prisoners.
So about 120 or so of us charge across a field against infantry. We close, and one little enemy captain is screaming that they surrender, holding his musket butt up. Several folks shoot at him, he gets irate and starts calling us names. He says you podunk hillbilly bleepity bleeps…
BLAM blam blam blam. We all unload on him. Fun times

Great fun allright, but just had a flashback of how painful it was after 3 days having a 8 pound or so Sharpes carbine hanging off a strap on your shoulder.
Gun scabbards aren’t period correct for that era, so it just hangs off a strap/swivel from the saddle ring. If you ride a Mcclellan saddle there is a thimble that the barrel rides in, but I don’t think they do much for taking weight off, just keeps it from flopping about. I rode a correct, but civilian style Hope saddle, so I had to hold carbine in one hand when things got bouncy. And with all those horses milling around, the big hammer spur is just the right height to get smashed into side of your knee. I swear, when you’re all lined up knee to knee, it feels like every horse on both sides starts leaning in on you Continuation from my other post
