I enjoyed working with metals when I did
Been doing this for a living most of the last 33 years, cut a trainload of
M4 and T15 tool steel, a lot of it soft then hardened 65 Rc and more, recut with cbn inserts. But up until now I’d somehow managed to avoid super-alloys. Till now. Getting my feet wet with a bunch of Monel. A bunch of 90/10 copper nickel too, though it’s no where as bad. Luckily our tool rep hooked us up with the right grade of cutting tools, and I have bent a lot of folks ears over speeds and feeds.
It’s really been going great, I’m surprised. Makes stringy nasty chips, and slow to run. But I’ve been told thats the nature of the beast, that I should be glad that at least the parts are looking good.

As a fabricator, I have huge respect for the guys that make the chips fly on all the spinning machines. Never had the chance to learn that aspect of the metal transformation business. My job is to join all those parts together and make sure they STAY together.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.J White LIKED above post

It’s cool what you do for sure. Don’t compromise yourself or the biz!

Lets start with this. This is in house work for our press department.
They bring me this extrusion punch, it’s picking up metal from the steel parts they’re forming with it. They want an additional ten thousandths off the back clearance, but don’t touch the land or face. Ok. That leads to this.
Taking small amounts with the cbn inserts, we run it dry rather than coolant flowing, thus the open door pictures. Roughing at .006 per cut with a finish pass at .002
This thing is about 66 rockwell C, a good file won’t even scratch it.

This what I spend my days poking at. 3 of these lathes in a semi circle. Sometimes I’m running all 3.
Yes they are nasty. We run from can till can’t, 58 hours a week or so. No stopping to clean up. They break and wear out stuff as fast as we can make it.

As I was getting this punch done, they tell us oh by the way, that’s our last one. Great. So that results in this getting dumped in my lap.
