Doesn’t look like a beaver or a person, it looks like a felled tree! Put your glasses on!
It's off the side of a well traveled walking track. Only thing cut down around there. Looks like a beaver cut tree and there is a hole filled with water the critter could be using for a den. I will have to watch it and see if it gets stripped of bark.

Maybe a beaver but they usually strip a lot of bark off as well. . Odd that the chips are so large and left at the base.

Definitely a beaver.
I was deer hunting one fine day in Virginia. I sat on a hillside over looking a beautiful pond. The Sun had me napping. Then I heard this horrible sound and as I was trying to get to my feet a large tree crashed down right beside me. Yup….beaver done it. He had gotten real close to me to do it, too. Their eye sight is rather poor, so he may or may not have known I was there.
I have watched them chewing trees, and as the hunks come away and get spit out, you get to thinking about what a bite from one might entail. I suspect they could go through bone pretty swiftly.
They are territorial and the kids are expected to find another location once of age. Could be one looking for a new site come wandering through.
Maybe they will bite this one……
I will have to watch and see If I can photograph the culprit in action

We have a population in my home water at Tyler State Park. (SE PA) They have perfect hidey holes along the bank from washed out tree stumps, but that chipping is so unique I know they’re there. A highly populated area but there they are.
