    Safest way:

    1) Use a PVC tube 6" longer than the rod. (You'll probably have to buy a 10' section and cut it to length.)

    2) Wrap the rods in bubble wrap.

    3) Put a cap on the bottom. (I usually use one or two pieces of cardboard cut to fit the tube.) I seal it with heavy duty clear shipping tape.

    4) Drop some padding into the tube (wadded up newspaper, etc.)

    5) Slide rod into tube.

    6) Drop some more padding into top of tube.

    7) Seal the top.

    8) Optional: add a "fragile" sticker or use a sharpie to draw "arrows" to indicate "this end up".

On the rods I give away on my channel I ship them in PVC pipe. Depending on how big stripper guide is how big I get my PVC. It ain't exactly cheap but they get there without damage. If I am lucky I will have an cardboard tube around where I got in a new rod out of Japan and ship it out in that. I doubt they will have any precut tubes as long as you need but Lowes...Home Depot.....will cut them for you if you need it.

One more thing: I use Priority Mail from the USPS. It's (relatively) cheap, fast, and it comes with a tracking number. I would not ship a rod without a tracking number.

Pvc also comes in schedule 40 and the sprinkler guys use schedule 20, or thinwall. Less weight for shipping. 12’ rods will cause you to have at least a 6’ 1” piece of tubing. I recently used polyethylene foam from another package for protecting the butt and tip. You don’t want it cut super tight as that will put pressure on the tip. I cut circles of the foam , I used two, that slide snug but not tight into the tube. Cut the circles and put them onto the rod, and use a stick to push it into the tube, butt section first, til it bottoms out. I put a small piece of tape on the rod to hold the circle in place with no bad effect. Check with the PO about max length. If they say 72” then you have to use test caps, if not, glue one cap on and tape the other.

Best thing I know of is go to your local carpet store and get one of the cardboard tubes they roll their carpet up on, then just cut to length, put rods in with padding, plug the ends and ship.
