Very cool. Western rat snake (Pantherophis obsoletus). Hope you didn't kill it. Great to have around as rodent control.
This guy climbed that tree and entered a squirrel den looking for dinner.

They can climb a slick bark cypress tree. Use to see them every year in the White River bottoms climbing to get wood duck
chicks. Chicken snake in our part of the country. Rat snake in other parts.
Tell'em I'll be there.
I agree that they are beneficial, but they still give me the creeps!

Many species of snakes get called various names. That's why herpetologists always use the Latin name. The "accepted" common name for these is Western rat snake. You'll hear them called chicken snakes and black rat snakes, among other things. But, in MO, they're always Pantherophis obsoletus (until they change up the taxonomy again).
When I was a herpetologist I never used the Latin names. Too hard to pronounce. Made my head hurt.

Where can I buy a couple of dozen of these? We are over run with squirrels and chip monks!
