Yanmar makes John Deere smaller tractors. All I've ever heard is that the service is much better at John Deere than at a Yanmar dealer. I would stay with the major brands so you can get service and parts when you need them. I'd get a tractor and put a bush hog type mower on it and go that way. An order tractor would work for you and not cost as much. You will probably need a 30hp up type tractor with at least a 5ft mower and my 45 hp and 5ft mower takes about 6 hrs to mow 12 acres.
I have not heard of that mower that you posted on so can't say.

porboy, do you think I would really need 30 HP for just 4 acres? I see yan-mar with the cubcadet dealers now, I may need to just go by and check them out. I want something I can mowe it relatively fast with but still use maybe some attachments for landscaping. Would I be better to rent attachments, i heard most places opnly rent them for 30 plus HP

    Default lawnmovers....

Seeing how we just made a lawn mower purchase I will add my 2 cents. Ended up getting a 26 (gas) john deere, 60 " deck. Was really concerned about whether it was enough motor for what we need. Have about 10 acres to mow in all and this thing is nothing less than a monster ! That zero turning is the only way to go (in most situations). Thought about getting the 31 hp with the 60 " deck but that 26 is more than ample. I stuck with jd for 2 reasons...price was good AND the service in our town is top notch. 2 or 3 years down the road I don't want to be taking it somewhere else. JD dealer is 5 minutes away...many variables to think about for sure. Service was a big deal for me...bought a 4 wheeler a few years ago and drove over 100 miles to "save" a few hundred. Getting it serviced 3 or 4 years later was a headache . Just something to think about.....

drifter, if you do not mind my asking what exact model did you get and if you do not mind me knowing, what did you pay for it and howmuch more was the 31 hp going to cost. You can pm me if you do not want to share the info here. The thing is with my property, it is not yard grass yet. I have to either bushhog it good then repeatedly mowe it for a while, or doze and scrape the top layer and seed it. I am not sure what to do yet. That is why I was thinking a tractor, maybe I could do it myself. However after I do the driveway and all, I do not think I will need a bunch of tractor attachments.

We purchased the z920A...it listed for $8,999.00 They had the z950A listed at 10,239.00. 5 more horse and the C & C pkg with the 950. Glad I went with the 920, does everything that we need and more. Kinda of ironic...they had a 930A listed for $100 more than the 950A and it has less hp than the 950A. The 900 series is a lot "beffier" than the 700 series mowers. Pumps and wheel motors are a little bit bigger on the 900 series, gas tank is larger, and the seat is a better fit. Guess its all in what you pay for...

    good luck...

one more thing...this thing cuts my cutting time DRASTICALLY! I have a place out in the country that I constantly was fighting with the bush hog. This thing does it so much better and leaves the yard looking real good. Do not regret getting the mower and wish I had made this move a few years ago.

Jimmy that was funny, I wish it did come with rod holders, would be nice if I could use itlike a transformer and it would change into a boat as well. I thought of goats, but right now I am not living on the property and I would be afraid the coyotes would get them. I thought about a small tractor to work the land with as well but I do not know much about tractors either.
Not sure about this statement...I mow 5 acres every 7 days....I use a craftsman GT5000 48" deck 27hp briggs & have been usin this mower for the same project now for 6 yrs wif 0 problems & 0 downtime!

O I only paid $1995 + tax for the mower!
I would recommend goin to sears (where I bought mine) & saving serveral serveral thousands of $$$$ :D

Takes me bout 3 hrs to mow it!
This mower is designed to be a workin tractor as well...they sell a plow, disc snow plow & serveral other attachments for this GT (Garden Tractor).
It def would be worth lookin into...i was curious how much the motor would cost me if i tore it up at sum point...well a brand new motor wif a 2/yr warranty is only $800.

The John Deere commercial zero turns are pretty good mowers. I have a friend that bought one about 3 years ago somewhere in the $8500 range and every 2 weeks he cuts 4.5 acres with it, and his son cuts about 9 acres. The only problem they have had was a busted spindle from hitting a big root. I think they changed the belt once, and the blades a couple times..... a couple of things that i would look for while shopping them is, the thickness of the deck and if the bearings and pulleys have grease zerts on them. The lower scale John Deere (residentials they sell at lowes) do NOT have zerts.

on the thickness of the deck, is the lower the number the stronger the steel or is it the higher number. for some reason I was thinking the lower the better. Bad boys has 1/4 inch steel decks, that sounds like it would be good
