Give it a while, you will get used to it. I hated mine at first just like you, but don't mind it so much now. Only problem is if you have big fingers, sometimes you will click on things you didn't mean to.
Yeah I don't like mine either but I've gotten used to it. Now if you really hate it you can go to walmart and get a logitech wireless mouse. You plug a little piece into the the USB port and the computer recognizes it and you use the mouse. I like the one I have because you can turn it off and conserve the battery. Was like 10 bucks.

Yeah, the little USB mouse is nice.
I have a Toshiba laptop as well, and I noticed the Toshiba Flash Card feature is a pita and a huge resource hog. If you would like to disable it I can tell you how.
Tom, there is a little light and button just above the touch pad that will turn off the touch pad. I turn mine off when I plug my wireless mouse into the laptop. Now the wireless mouse will get you talking to yourself too. Can't grip the dang thing cause it will change screens back to the previous screen but you can get use to that. It is a lot easier to screw up on a laptop, I hit buttons and away things go before I'm ready(premature ejectionofemail) Just have fun with it and you'll enjoy it eventually. I really enjoy mine even though it's a PIA. Ferdi aka Fred

My first laptop. I have PDAs and Tablets. They comes with a poking stick. Easy.
The older I get, the less I need really this chit. I just can't let go. It has been too much of my life I guess.

You might try turning down the sensitivity of the touchpad also....
On my Dell Inspiron it's under Start/Settings/Control Panel/ Mouse Pointers/Touchpad Tab........move slider all the way to "Heavy"....
