Exclamation E B, while that may be true ...

that the "old board" wasn't as expansive & selective as this one is now .... you have to remember that the membership was far less in number, too.

I've been here since 2001 ... back when the membership numbers were in the low "hundreds". Even then we had problems with certain members wanting to dictate how the site was run, usually to serve their own agenda. Spamming, trolling, user ID hi-jacking, personality clashes, and all sorts of other problems were rampant ... disrupting the whole concept of what the site was intended for. I was made Moderator of the whole site, and worked hard to clean things up. Unfortunately, the old format was too open for one person to moderate it effectively. The "new" board came in Apr 2004 ... and has changed and expanded since then, to what it is now. Many members resisted the change from the old site format, to the "new" one, saying that they didn't like having to register, didn't like all the new functions, didn't like the seperation of forum topics, etc etc. Some of them were left in the dust, but most finally came on over ... and I doubt they'd ever want to go back to the way it "used to be".

You want a little deja vu :p .... check this out :
Main Crappie Fishing Forum [Archive] - Crappie.com

You can go back, all the way to Apr 2004, and read the posts from the Main Message Board ... up to the current ones. Well, those that have not been deleted, anyway. All the old (previous) site posts are gone, deleted along with the old site. Three years of my dedication to this site, its members, and the sport ... answering as many of the "same ol same ol" questions, as we still get asked now ... all gone. But, it was for the sake of the site, the integrity of the site, and the control of the site for the better ... so I don't complain. I follow the rules, contribute what I can, and try and help keep members from getting into trouble.

    *************************
As for the Sponsor members posting their wares ... openly or "skirting" ... they've paid for the right to do so. I would suggest, for those that do not wish to be subjected to these posts, that the use of the "Ignore Member" function be one way to deal with that. Another way would be to use the same statement/idea that's commonly suggested about the political posts that occur on this forum ---- "don't read it, if you don't like it".

And before anyone gets their knickers in a knot, and starts ranting about double standards ... this forum's rules state that politics are not to be discussed "here", so the "don't like/don't read" statement is invalid here --- but, since the Sponsor member's posts are not violating any rules, it's your choice to read them or not (which makes it a valid choice in that case).

It was just a place that we could all talk about Crappie fishing and tell a few lies to make ourselves feel good. I don't see why there has to be a catagory on hunting for instance when this is a fishing, "Crappie" fishing site. I have never complained about anyone wanting to add a new catagory, because I felt I just didn't need to visit the forum if I didn't like it. I could complain about all the advertising on the main forum when we have a swap forum for just that. When are we going to see those post get deleted from the main forum and sent to the proper forum, Sponsor or not. They skirt around the rules by asking what people think of a new jig they have just tied or a new color complete with a picture of the new jig. I really don't care about what other people say and or do as long and the playing field is fair. It seems that the newer members want to high-jack this site and change the way things have been done for years, not months that they have been a member. For the ones that keep holloring foul, go start your own site, run it the way you want it to run, and leave this one in tact as us old codgers have built it up the way we wanted it to be, and have been accustom to for years and not months as some of you. IMHO EB Not complaining mind you, just pi$$ed off at the childish behavor that has been allowed to get a grasp on our site.
OMG, Beav, we have a common ground. Something we both agree on. Could this possibly be a new beginning for us?

I was on the phone to Rusty just last night talking about the exact same thing. How several members do nothing more than whore out their products every chance they get. Prime example would be what you wrote about the jigs. It's the same with anyone trying to peddle something.

That said, I would think Darryl Morris would have the right to post since he has actually bought an advertising slot for his Family Fishing Trips.

All others that peddle their stuff may have tossed 20 bucks towards Ed to help the site and expect to use the site to sell their products.

If I were moderator of the Main Forum, any thread, whether I liked the guy or not, that had any semblance of a sales pitch would get the shift to the swap meet.

I'd like to see a thread started that calls all the people who peddle their wares on a consistant basis, and send them to the OOT forum along with the newbie whiners. TI wouldn't mind attending a get together of all of them just so I could start slapping some sense into each and every one of them (kinda like a communion line). Slap one, then forgive him for being a moron.

The Main board has become a cesspool of members that peddle their products. That is why most older C.Cer's hang out in the OT forum to avoid the carnage. Then we have the newbies trying to change everything along with the Main Forum "Super Mod" trying to see the OT plays by the rules set forth by Ed.

Even God himself slaps someone around when they need it.

Question UH, say what .... ???

"The Main board has become a cesspool of members that peddle their products. That is why most older C.Cer's hang out in the OT forum to avoid the carnage. Then we have the newbies trying to change everything along with the Main Forum "Super Mod" trying to see the OT plays by the rules set forth by Ed."

I'm sorry you feel like the Main Message Board is a cesspool of peddlers ... but, as I stated to EB ... they've paid their dues, and aren't breaking any rules.
"Some" of the long time members hang out here, not "most". And some, by their own admission, aren't interested in talking fishing, anyway ... they'd rather debate politics. A place was made for them to do so, and they still complain about the method used to get them their own special forum. Those members wanted to have things "their way", and they lost that bid .. but, they were given a soapbox forum. And it's FREE (or would you political debaters prefer to pay to play ... like the Sponsor members ? ) IF it's not satisfactory enough, to have your own sandbox to play in ... then consider the alternatives : play by the rules or get edited/deleted/timeouts/banned - removal of the OTC forum - removal of both OT forums - members leaving.
Newbies aren't the only ones trying to "change" things to suit themselves. In fact, most newbies don't even know enough history of the site & OT forums, to know what changes to ask for. I think the "newbies" you are referring to, are the ones that are asking for compliance to the current rules ... not to change anything (except errant behavior).

And, as far as me trying to see that the "OT plays by the rules set forth by Ed" ....... what's wrong with that ?? That's what Mods are supposed to do

Oh, and as for Darryl/Jerry posting their "ad" posts (trip pics/get together threads) .... they've posted lots of them, in the past, and are free to do so now. They, like the Sponsor members that post about their new jig creations, have paid for the right to do so. Would you rather we had a forum for every seperate thing that has anything to do with fishing ?? A line forum, a bobber forum, a hook forum, a rod forum, reel forum, boat forum, ad nauseum Would you prefer that ALL Sponsor members have to post in the Swap Meet/Classifieds forum ?? Now who's trying to "change" things

Don't misunderstand me Pappy! I wasn't complaining, but just pointing out that there are some things that I don't care for that I COULD complain about if I was so petty to do so. You can't put a bunch of different cultural people in a room, and have them all get along together. That is impossible to do. It seem that the whiners don't say a word until the view is different than theirs and then they cry foul. I have always tried to follow the rules until they aren't enforced and then will reply if I feel a need to do so. EB
