Default What kind of bird is this?

Have two of these nesting in a tree in our yard. Back and forth in a big hole. These birds are big, some kind of duck or goose. Nest is big in an old dead tree:

Haven't a clue what they are, thought I'd ask you fellas. Ann just took the pictures, so kinda dark. Cool as can be to me. They'd been busy, please let me know what they are - I need to know. Life in the country. Thanks.

Okay, thanks my friend. We have Wood Ducks that nest here, but never have seen these. I guess being on the Vermilion river, these birds decided to stop off and make a nest. Cool with us, we like such things.

They are getting pretty common as of late. They used to be found along the Texas coast and sometimes in southwestern La. but they have moved eastward. We have plenty of them in Houma. the visit the overflow pound 1 block from my house and just this past week I saw 4 of them land in a large oak tree on my neighbor's property. They are also tasty.

We used to spend a month in Rock Port on the coast and the RV park was full of them. First time we had ever heard of them.

Black bellied tree duck, that duck along with the fulvous tree duck are what most of us call Mexican squealers. The fulvous looks just like that one except with a light brown belly where this one has a black belly. Very good eating too!
