    Default University Lake report

Our two small Orange County reservoirs managed by the local water and sewer authority, OWASA recently opened their recreation season. The smaller lake is University Lake (213 acres) and the larger is Cane Creek Reservoir (540 acres.) They are both electric-only lakes. Took my 2yr old son to University Lake (4 min. from my house) on saturday. While we were really there for site seeing, we took a couple poles to help pass the time. Setup for a little longlining and tossed out. An hour passed and not a single bite. No mind... enjoyed lunch while chasing after ducks at 3mph. Rerigged both poles for a little spider-riggin' and hit the main (only?) creek channel, poles in each hand. Wasn't 5 min. before we starting getting bit. Hooked a few and pulled up some small black crappie. Continued on and wandered over a pretty agressive school. Could hardly get the jig down and we'd get hit. With the trolling motor, kept to that one spot and we probably pulled up 15 fish before getting tired. I'd hook one, hand the rod to my son and he'd do his best reeling it in (only 10' deep.) Two problems: 1) All fish were under 10" with most 6-8" 2) For fun, my son has a tendency to huck the rod into the water at random intervals.

Turns out University Lake was stocked with both black and white crappie so I got my hands on several whites for the first time, even if they were only 6". Pretty cool.

Eventually ended up in a sheltered cove out of the wind where my son decided to take a siesta.

We're definitely cut from the same cloth.

That is the way I used to deer hunt.
Crappie fishing is my lighthouse of sanity in an insane world,
It keeps me from crashing on the rocky shores of everyday life.

This reminds me of when I use to go with my grandparents years ago. When I got tried, I would lay down and take a nap also. Thanks for helping me to remember those times with my grandparents. I just hope they find all the right spots in Heaven to fish.
