    Default Transom mount longlining

Hey guys. I have been longlining out the front of my ole Jon boat for about a year now. Got a platform built and a nice foot control trolling motor. Just staggering different length rods from the front on the sides you know what I’m saying. In a perfect world I would have a wireless trolling motor and I would fish straight out the back. My dad got me a variable speed transom mount. The idea is I will sit back there and troll from the back. I have a seat and rod holders in the back so in theory it should work. My question is...does anyone have experience with a transom mount working right? Does it propel the boat straight ? The setup puts the handle very close to me so adjusting speed and direction won’t be any more of a pain than with my foot. Just want some thoughts and/or ideas from all you EXPERTS

It shouldn't be any different, it will steer like a tiller motor, probably won't react as quick as needed so keep that in mind. as long as you can get your speeds right it should be fine.

you will not like it if you already have a bow mount motor,,,Just think,it's a lot easier to pull a chain that to push one.

Assuming you also have an outboard motor, make sure it is pointed straight ahead or you'll look like a drunk going down the road.

Please be cautious of setting any trolling motor (front or rear mounted) on continuous thrust. You should also consider having a kill switch device or some way of killing power to the trolling motor(s) in an emergency type situation.

Since no one else brought it up... I would remind everyone that there could be no worse circumstance or "sight to see" than your boat continuously moving away from you after you have fallen out of it well off shore... especially in the winter time... and more specifically with dangerous water temps and the very real risk of hypothermia and death.

Using a transom mount just didnt work on my jon boat. I had a variable speed as well. When sitting in the back the front raised up and just became a sail. I wouldn't even go out on light breezy days it was so frustrating.

Thanks for the reply. Mine is almost 17ft. With the platform and gonNa leave trolling motor I already have on there. Hopefully enough weight. I see your side though . I guess the only think to do is give it a try. And if I don’t like it I’ll let my buddy with a canoe borrow it haha
