Hey Grady,
The answer to this is very vague. Dont want to sound funny, but this time of year we have caught them anywhere from 8ft of water to 80ft of water. Lots of variables I can write a book about but it all changes day to day.
Things i look at is bait, wind, water clarity, and the 2 most important things is water temp, AND my tight network of friends fishing the lake regularly.
I am a firm believer that water temp is key on Norman. I love fishing water that is 47-50 degrees. something about that mark that the fish just really turn on.
In the last 3 weeks, we have caught fish in State park, Rocky creek, stumpy creek, Mt creek, littles creek, and several mainlake locations. Its not just 1 area. some days they feed in one creek better than the other. ect ect.
A lot of guys say find the birds, find the fish. This is very true. HOWEVER this winter, the gulls have been fat and lazy. i havent seen birds working but a handful of times this season. ive had better days finding my own school of fish feeding in scattered bait balls.
I do things different then 90% of the people and troll artificial striper sniper shad on leadcore/downriggers. A-rigs on some of the lines. Its not the ONLY way to catch them, but its the way I have found most effective and for me, cost efficient over the years. I say cost efficient because i do not need to spend $6+ per dozen on baits.
If you plan on fishing Norman a lot in the coming years, one of the best investments you can make is hiring a guide. It will eliminate a lot of the guesswork and be more productive with each outing.
