Wanted to say thanks to all that gave advice on inflatable vests. After trying several went with Onyx A/M 24’s. Got them after Christmas, been on a few trips and it’s barely there. Sure there are better deals somewhere but picked mine up at Academy for $89.99.

Just remember these type vest only count if you are wearing them. They do not count in the "number of life vest on board" if you are checked by an officer. If you have two people on board and two inflatables but are not wearing them you have "0" life vest on board. This is the way it was explained to me during a random check. Luckily I had two regular vest as well. Is this y'alls understanding of the law as well?

That was the way it was explained to me. So I always have regular life preservers on board. I wear the auto inflatable while fishing alone, but harly ever if I'm with someone else. However, lately I have been rethinking the hardly ever part of this equation.

My instructions say not to use them when it's below 40 degrees. I have an onyx a/m. What's ya'll thoughts on that?

I have an 80 year old fishing buddy (more like an extra DAD) that isn't as sure footed as he used to be. His wife told us if he's gonna continue to go with me, he would have to start wearing a vest at all times. I bought us both a Stearns manual waist belt type and we've been using them for a year or so and really don't have anything negative to say about them. The plus is they have d rings on them that hold the trolling motor remote nicely.
