I use to live in Hickory NC now my wife and I live close to Surf City NC where my family has had a small cabin about 3 miles from the beach. The little cabin has rode out many storms and we hope it will ride this one out with us staying in it this time. I came down a week after Fran and saw first hand the destruction and devastation Fran did to Topsail Island. This is where we call home now and fully understand what can happen with these kind of storms. We have and are getting supplies together making plans to ride this one out because if we leave it may be a week or so before we could get back. We are checking into shelters that will let us bring our dog if need be we got to a shelter. If you would keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we stay at the place we love to call home. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you all because this storm will and is going to affect a lot of us. If we make and the boat makes it thru we are looking forward to seeing our fishing friends and family at High Rock lake for the clash.

Thoughts and prayers are with you and everyone else near and nearer to the ocean where this thing will be the worst. They say it's the worst hurricane since Hazel in 1954 to impact NC. Hopefully, something will happen between now and Thursday that will help lessen the impact and strength.

Everyone needs to take precautions. Hope your decision to ride it out is a good one. We'll be praying for everyone in it's path and surrounding area's. I've had my taste of what a typhon can do on Guam and It ain't no picnic. Hope everyone will be safe!

I hate it for you guys. I rode out Opal in SE AL still with 95 mph winds when she came by. We had torrential rains ahead of the storm and I've never seen as many trees down in my life. We were without power for 10 or 12 days IIRC.

I reckon it's something that everyone who lives around the coastal areas has to deal with sooner or later... or even many times over... depending on how long you live there. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be as devastating as what Texas, Louisiana and others have had to endure. Heck, there are people in NC who are still trying to recover from Hurricane Matthew (within a few days of) two years ago.

Pete, We're supposed to fly out of RDU Saturday Morning. You think they will cancel flights?

We're going to get hammered similarly to how Hazel hit (which is the barometer for the older generations). You board up and get off the coast, is the best advice I can give. We've never seen wind or a storm surge like this one is going to bring us, I'm afraid. This will most likely be a historical, life altering event.

The weather channel is saying pretty much the same thing jack. A category 4 and perhaps 5 when she comes ashore. The worst part of it is how slow it's moving and how long it would likely be over some areas and they're even saying that it may likely stop moving for hours once it gets over land.

I'm not looking forward to Florence at all. In September of 1996, I was watching the weather channel as Fran approached. Our power went out (Durham/Orange/Person County line) about the time the eye wall hit Wilmington. My wife slept through it (!) while I didn't sleep a wink, with all the trees coming down and transformers blowing up all around us. We ended up being out of power for 9 days and I got to feeling like I was running the chainsaw in my sleep.

    Jim
