Looked up the water temperature on Jordan and we are still in the safe zone for the shad. I'm sure the surface temp is a lower, but down a few feet it is 47 degrees. I can't remember if the thermometer is at seven or nine feet, but at least for right now, most of the shad should be okay. Here is the Army Corp of Engineers report from yesterday. Sure would like to get some rain to get the level back up to normal. We are just a little over 4 feet down now.

We'll miss seeing you this weekend in Raleigh. Sitting in his workshops over the past few years is where I learned all about multi-rod crappie fishing.
The cold water flow under the 64 bridge from the frozen parts of the upper lake is what we have to be concerned with.

Went across Jordan Sunday morning. Approximately 200 seagulls swarming near the bridge. Shad kill may have occurred!!
Seeing the gulls this time a year is not uncommon. What you will need to see if the bait is floating. I haven't heard of any floating at Jordan or Harris.
Many times when the water gets this cold for a long time, the smaller threadfin shad, that can't tolerate the cold well......will move in deep deep water looking for warmth. The shad will get lethargic and often get sucked down stream of the reservoir. You don't often see shad kills in the shallower parts of the lake unless the shad get trapped for some reason like ice.
The shad those seagulls are chancing probably aren't the 2 to 3 inch shad that usually die in this type of weather.... Man are those 2 to 3 inch shad important though. Perfect size for just about anything to eat......
I went to check the ice situation on Roanoke Rapids lake during our first cold spell and snow. There were dead shad and bream everywhere under the ice. A friend on Gaston actually went ice fishing on his cove on Gaston lake. Water temp on Gaston Saturday was 39. I didn't catch any fish and neither did my ice fishing buddy.
We've been the past 2 Saturday's and no fish! Marking huge pods of baitfish but the birds are relentless.
